#instagram is a pretty cool place, so much so that it brought me to Texas to see the operation of @bryceteal and his family. They grow a huge amount of cotton in a area starving of water. It has been interesting how they have converted their operation to #notillfarming practices. I’ll have more to show in the next days ahead. I found a few things I want to take home. Why do I farm? I farm because I’d rather see the sunset every night. That my sunset isn’t blocked by brick and mortar. I farm because it was passed down to me by my parents. I farm because I was taught the value of a hard days work, that despite what some teachers told me I wasn’t capable of doing, I have a satisfaction of providing a meal for the very people that told me I wasn’t capable of much. ... I farm because it’s everything good, despite being told we are ruining the environment. Meanwhile those very people ruin land with every brick taking up valuable farm land just so they can have another coffee store with all its environmentally friendly cups snd straws. I farm because I bring joy to people’s lives. I farm because that flower I produce brings a smile to the face of someone dying of cancer. That somehow those last hours of life are filled with joy and not despair. I farm because it’s one of the last places besides home that a family can be together and share valuable time together filled with smiles and laughter. I farm because it’s one of few places void of drama, politics, anger or fear. I farm because it’s what I love, nobody should ever look down at anyone for what they do. I remember a time when we were trying to reach 10,000 Likes on FB and 3000 on Instagram. Doing social media isn’t so easy. I have zero formal training, however, I’m trying to reach back out to everyone daily. I know some would hand their accounts to employees or services that do social media. I believe that nobody else can share the passion, the struggle, the humor, the knowledge of what we are trying to accomplish at our farm.
