What with all this downtime we have on our hands now, why not give your worried mind a break from the media and the news , and dive into a puzzle or two?? Did you know that puzzles are a fun and creative way to turn on your higher brain and turn off your anxious brainstem? Focusing on the task at hand, as well as the hand-eye coordination needed to put the pieces together, exercises your frontal lobe and the central executive neural network involved in focus, atte...ntion and concentration The visuospatial activities strengthens your parietal and occipital lobes, regions of your nervous system involved in body awareness and visual processing And the attention to the intricate details of the pieces lights up the what visual pathway in your brain AKA the ventral stream, linking your temporal lobe to your brainstem, occipital lobe and orbitofrontal cortex. Amazing, isn’t it?? PROTIP: work on it with friends and family to engage your limbic system, which will help calm any feelings of sadness, fear or worry you might be experiencing now. And if you’re by yourself, put on some soothing music to get a similar effect. And don’t forget: you are NOT alone. #wereinthistogether #betterdaysahead #rest #keepgoing #yourethebest #relax #chill #neuroplasticity #brainhealth #brainplasticity #brainhacks #brainpower #puzzles #brainsave #concussion #themodernbrain #drtituschiu

One of the biggest lessons that I learned after my car accident many years ago and was recovering from a concussion, was this: Double down on things you can control and let go of the rest. Because I found that after my car accident my brain just wasn't working the same it was prior to my head injury. So I tried to... control situations and events ...make things go as they had before my accident ...force my way through life And I was totally overwhelmed and exhausted. Exerting all my energy to control external events just wasn't working for me anymore. And so I ended up hitting rock bottom. That was the point when I realized that there were so many things I really did not have any control over. But There was ALSO a lot that I did. So I began to double down on those things. When I did, my healing began to accelerate. This is now one of the core principles that I live my life by doubling down on the things that I have the ability to control and letting go of the rest. #healinganxiety #anxietysucks #anxietyproblems #braininjurysurvivor #concussionrecovery #braininjuryawareness #braininjury #concussionrehab #postconcussionsyndrome #mindfulnesspractice #mindfulmeditation #positivethinker #powerofpositivity #superbrain #braingym #mindsetmatters #creativeexpression #dairyfree #foodasmedicine #organic #gratitude #glutenfree #ketogenic #brainsave #drtituschiu #themodernbrain #braindoctor

For many, the past 12 months has been filled with stress and burnout. That’s the bad news. . Ready for the good news?... There are 5 simple yet powerful steps you can take NOW to strengthen and care for your brain to avoid burnout and to help your brain become more resilient in these stressful times. If you incorporate this morning ritual into your daily life you will become more focused, engaged and present with yourself and others, and avoid feeling stressed out all the time. 5 powerful steps to take NOW to strengthen and care for your brain 1Practice conscious belly breathing first thing in the morning As soon as you wake up, sit up, and breathe. Bring your awareness to the breath going in and out of your nostrils Feel your belly expanding and contracting with each cycle of inhalation and exhalation Start out at 3 minutes and work your way up to an hour 2Drink 1/2 liter of water in the morning Prepare it the night before and put it next to your bed Add freshly squeezed lemon for an added zing and to balance out your pH 3Take a high quality fish oil 1000 mg of an EPA:DHA blend in the morning Repeat in the evening 4Move! After belly breathing, water and fish oils, do something to get your blood flowing whether that’s walking, jogging, or jamming out to your favorite tunes. 5Eat a high quality breakfast Focus on low sugar, moderate protein, and high fat Example: soft-boiled eggs, avocado and asparagus To get maximum impact, I highly recommend that you do your ritual first thing in the morning, because it sets the tone for the rest of your day. Last week I gave you a glimpse into PHASE 1 of my health journey (if you didn’t catch last week’s post, check it out first!) . PHASE 2 Since natural and holistic medicine literally saved my life, I wanted to learn anything and everything I could about healing and the brain, and share my discoveries with as many people I possibly could... .... I went back to school and soaked up everything I could get my hands on Flew all over the world to learn from the masters of Functional Medicine, Neurology, Nutrition, Chiropractic and Acupuncture Ran a very successful clinical practice, and helped thousands of patients get to the root cause for their brain health challenges Went on several chiropractic service trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic Traveled all over the world teaching other doctors (Amsterdam, Dublin, Canada, and countless states all over the US) . . And I put all the things that I learned in school, seminars and workshops to the test ~ Changing my diet Taking supplements Getting regular massages & chiropractic care Experimenting with advanced brain healing technologies . I wanted to experience it all for myself first hand, the power of these breakthrough techniques and practices. . And along the way, many of them gave me a ton of: Motivation Energy Mental Clarity . . ...BUT...something wasn’t right. . On the outside it seemed like I had everything going for me- traveling the world, teaching other doctors, seeing patients, running a busy practice. . But on the inside, I was struggling I was grappling with anger issues, spiraling negative self-talk, and fighting several addictions and losing. All this chaos was taking over my life. . And while my outer professional life was thriving, my inner personal world was falling apart at the seams. . I had been raised in a loving and caring family and had never struggled with these issues before so I had no idea what was happening to me. . But I did know that if I didn’t get a handle on it, something would give. . And something finally did... . I’ll tell you what that was next week PLUS what I did to overcome that expanding chaos. Brain Hack: Eat more fiber . Toxin build up in our bodies can affect our brains! One way to eliminate toxins is through regular bowel movements. . Fiber helps speed up bowel movements and the removal of poop from our digestive pipes. I recommend 25-35 grams of both soluble and insoluble fiber a day.... . You can get that in 5 servings of fruits and vegetables and a handful of nuts and seeds. . Here are some great sources of soluble fiber: Apples Blueberries Oranges Carrots Onions Bananas Jerusalem artichoke Strawberries . Here are some yummy sources of insoluble fiber: Seeds and skins of fruit Almonds Pine nuts Pistachios Fresh coconut meat Dates . Choose organic, pesticide free produce and eat the skins of your apples, cucumbers, pears etc. for the best results. . Share this brain hack with someone you know who needs a good poop! See more

Brain Hack Supplement: Turmeric . You can go to the grocery store and get it in a powder form to be used for cooking. Turmeric is a spice that’s often used in curries. . However, you can also take it in supplement form.... . I actually prefer it in a supplement form as well. . The one I take specifically has black pepper in it because it helps the absorption of turmeric to cross your blood-brain barrier and has powerful anti-inflammatory effects. . The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Curcumin has been shown to have huge anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant properties, and they've done studies showing people that have a higher intake of curcumin or turmeric in their diet, like those who eat a lot of curry have a lower risk for Alzheimer's and dementia. It's been used for thousands of years in Chinese and Indian medicine. . . Have you tried turmeric or curucumin before? See more

One of the key pillars of brain health is your chemical brain i.e. the environment or neurochemical milieu that your neural networks exist in. . Two great ways to optimize your neurochemistry are through the nutrition (both food & targeted nutrients) you provide it. . 1 The ketogenic diet... This diet is where you train your brain to use fat for fuel instead of sugar. . Sugar might seem like a good source of fuel for your brain, but if not used properly you run the risk of ending up on a blood sugar roller coaster. . The ketogenic diet lets you rely on healthy fats like coconut oil, avocados, olive oil, and moderate amounts of yummy protein like chicken thighs. If you’re on a vegan diet, consider legumes and beans as a source of protein. . You also need to eat REALLY low carb (around 15 grams of carbs per day). . 2 Personalize your brain-boosting supplement protocol. . You can discover what works best for you through specific and advanced functional medicine lab testing. Reach out to functional medicine practitioners trained in neurology to find out the best labs for you. . I also work with clients virtually so even if you’re not in California, feel free to apply to become a client and if it’s a good fit we’ll make it happen. . Uff...does anyone else need a Bento Box for their brain right now? . . . If you’re unfamiliar with a Bento Box, it’s a small, single-portion meal that’s intentionally prepared and put into a small box where only the essentials are selected.... . In the case of both information and Bentos, more is not better. . Essentially, the Bento Box for my brain is a Nutrient-Dense, Low-Info (NDLI) diet. . What do I mean by a NDLI diet? . There is this concept in nutrition of nutrient density, which refers to the balance of nutrient content in a food versus it’s caloric content. Nutrient dense (ND) foods pack in huge amounts of nutritional value with fewer calories than energy-dense (ED) or empty calorie foods. . (ND) vs(ED) . I’ve extended this concept from food to information. . Bento or Buffet? . I liken a brain on a NDLI Diet to a Bento Box. . I liken a brain on an Energy-Dense Junk-Info (EDJI) Diet to a 24-7 all-you-can-eat buffet. . I used to partake in the latter. The result: consumption of a lot of unnecessary junk info and resultant obesity of the brain. And...I feel like with what’s going on in the world, more & more is slipping back in. . . How to Kick the EDJI Diet Habit . Accept my 1-week media detox challenge. With the exception of information that is critical for your work or your Life’s Mission, cut out all: internet social media newspapers magazines books TV . At the end of the fast, consume mainly nutrient dense, critical information (quality not quantity). If you still need the occasional fix, create specific blocks of time to splurge on EDJI. . 5 easy steps to make a Bento Box for your brain: . 1Turn off your computer/smartphone 2Stand up, close your eyes and stretch 3Breathe in through your nose for 5 seconds 4Then out through your nose for 10 seconds 5Open your eyes to a Whole New World . . If you accept this challenge, I’d love to hear what struggles, breakthroughs and insights you had during your 1-week detox. . Deep within the bioenergetic blueprint of your brain lives a vast reservoir of infinite potential. . When your mind is clear and focused it becomes a major source of joy, love, abundance, passion, presence and power. . One of the biggest obstacles keeping us from this potential is the stress of living in a modern, industrialized world.... . Stress-related illness is the number one killer in today’s world. And I’m not just talking about the diseases that most people think of when talking about brain health. I’m also speaking to the more common things that many of us experience on a daily basis: . Brain fog Low energy Poor focus Memory slips Irritability Chronic pain Lack of motivation Restlessness The list goes on and on! . . When we’re faced with a stressor whether it be bad news, a sugar-laden cupcake or not enough sleep our adrenal glands kick in and flood our brains and bodies with cortisol. . Cortisol is a hormone that’s needed for survival but when in excess exerts a profoundly destructive force on our brains, immune cells and endocrine systems. . After many years of study and thousands of hours of research exploring the best of what Eastern and Western medicine have to offer us I’ve put together a step-by-step, science-based heart-felt approach to help you unleash the infinite potential hidden within the genetic blueprint of your brain. . I’ve used this approach on myself as well as with thousands of patients and clients throughout the years with great success. . The 9 Steps to a Perfect Brain . 1 Activate Your Brain 2 Feed Your Cells 3 Move Your Body 4 Play with Life 5 Connect with Others 6 Raise Your Spirit 7 Mind Your Systems 8 Be in the Moment 9 Sleep, Rest and Repeat . By understanding and implementing the 9 Steps to a Perfect Brain you will discover the keys to unlocking your brain’s infinite potential (neuroplasticity), how to take control of your own health and wellbeing, and learn how to move through the world. . As a Functional Medicine practitioner that specializes in neurology, I’ve worked with thousands of patients suffering from complex brain disorders . Concussion Anxiety Brain fog and fatigue... Chronic insomnia The list goes on and on . And every single day I see the impact that it has not only on my patients, but also the massive ripple effects it has on their family, friends and loved ones. . It’s so sad to see. . I’ve also witnessed remarkable stories of healing and recovery as well from immediate relief from the ravaging symptoms of post-concussion syndrome, to the reversal of chronic insomnia, to a lifetime of anxiety being alleviated in just a few months all without the use of drugs or surgery. . That’s why I’m deeply passionate about educating the world about the healing power of Natural and Functional Medicine... . This passion not only comes from my experiences as a doctor in the trenches of care, but also from my own healing journey with natural medicine . Before helping others fix their brains, I struggled with many chronic neurological symptoms myself although at the time I didn’t attribute them to my own broken brain. . I had resigned myself to the belief that that was just the way I was that being depressed, unmotivated, tired all the time, brain foggy and constantly getting sick was normal. . Little did I know that all my symptoms that I had identified with wasn’t who I was but was a result of a brain out of balance. . The breaking point was when I got in a horrible car accident that nearly cost my life. Although I survived, I was left in chronic pain, suffered a concussion, and unable to do all the things that I loved. . I tried everything conventional medicine, physical therapy, painkillers but nothing worked. It wasn't until I discovered natural medicine that I began to address the root cause for all my symptoms and my brain began to heal. . Now it’s your turn - if you feel inspired to share, I would love to hear your brain story! See more

Brain Hack: Avoid the brain toxin, BPA . One of the most common brain toxins you’ve probably heard of before is Bisphenol A. . Bisphenol A, or BPA for short, is a very common toxin found in many different sources:... Plastic foods Food and drink packaging (like to-go coffee cups) Receipts Coating on food cans Things you store your food in . The key is to do everything you can to minimize your exposure to BPA. . How I try to live BPA free . Instead of to-go coffee cups... I use my own stainless-steel coffee mug that I bring with me everywhere. . Instead of printed receipts... Rather than carrying around BPA laden toxic receipts, I have an app on my iPhone that snaps a picture of the receipt so I can get rid of the receipt right away. You can also ask for an email receipt at many stores. . Instead of to-go food containers I bring my own glass containers if I know that I’m going to have leftovers or if I’m going for takeout. Save your brain AND the world :) . . You might be thinking, wow, that seems excessive. But think about it. These are the things that we do every single day, that add up over time, leading to massive toxic exposure in the long run. . My motto is control what you have the ability to, and then don’t stress about the rest. The good news is, there are a lot of different things you can do to minimize your exposure to toxins. . I never meant to be a chiropractor, much less a Functional Neurologist that specializes in Post Concussion Syndrome. . However, that all changed after I witnessed the power of chiropractic medicine first hand. . I was in a horrible car accident over 20 years ago and, although I survived, I was left with chronic pain.... . My brother, also a chiropractor, suggested I come to him for a few adjustments to see if he could help. . I was skeptical, but I went for it. . After only 3-4 sessions, the pain went away and I felt amazing - I could hardly believe it. . So I went back to school, because I knew I had to help others. Little did I know that I would soon dive deeper into the wonderful and complex world of neurology. . Fast forward almost twenty years later, I feel so honored to be able to help people heal their brains and get their lives back. People from all over the world both virtually as well as some super dedicated folk who fly in from all across the globe to see me in-person. . 5 reasons why your brain might not be healing after your concussion . 1Unchecked inflammation When you sustain a head injury, your immune system launches a powerful inflammatory response inside your brain. Although this process is necessary for healing, if left unchecked can cause massive destruction of brain cells. .... If this happens in your frontal lobe, you may experience anxiety, depression, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and problems maintaining your focus. . 2Rampant excitotoxicity When brain cells are healthy, they use chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) to communicate in a controlled and precise manner. After a concussion, cells lose this precise control and dump all their contents out into the surrounding area, flooding nearby cells with extremely powerful excitatory neurotransmitters. If this is rampant in your brainstem, you may experience sensitivity to light and sound, irritability, headaches and insomnia. 3Free radical overload Free radicals are highly reactive chemicals your brain and body produce naturally. However, too many free radicals causes damage to your DNA and your brain cells. People with Post-Concussion Syndrome tend to have much higher levels of free radicals in their brain than people who haven’t suffered a head injury. . If this happens in your cerebellum, you may experience balance problems, motion sickness or headaches when reading or looking at a screen for too long. . 4Sick mitochondria The mitochondria are the energy producing cells of your brain and body. They are susceptible to damage caused by free radicals and can render them unable to supply your brain and body with enough energy for healing. . People with concussions often experience high levels of neurofatigue and brain fog. 5 Functional brain imbalance Functional brain imbalance is why so many people still suffer from PCS weeks, months and even years after their original trauma. It is THE most commonly overlooked root cause of PCS. Every single concussion patient I’ve worked with has shown signs of this, as indicated during their neurological exam. p.s. Do you know someone who is suffering from PCS? Share this post with them!

One of the things when we talk about stress that's really important to understand is, it's not stress that kills us, but rather the stress response. . Rampant stress for a normal individual can be damaging. . Rampant stress for someone recovering from #postconcussionsyndrome can make it nearly impossible to heal.... . When fixing your brain, one of the biggest goals is to try to spend as much time with the parasympathetic nervous system activated. . One #biohack I use is to take adaptogenic supplements because when healing from a #concussion it can be more difficult to engage in typical stress reduction activities like meditation. . My favorite? . Eleuthero . You might not have heard of this fancy term before, but it also goes by the name of Siberian Ginseng. . Since Eleuthero is an adaptogenic herb, the adapt part is what helps our brains and bodies adapt to and handle stress and so specifically. It helps our nervous system handle the stresses of everyday life so that you can fix your brain, and live your life. . Save this post to remember this amazing herb! See more

A question I get all the time from people interested in my approach to brain health is What does your process look like? . Well, I’m glad you asked! . I like to give every patient who walks through our door a comprehensive, personalized, yet practical ROADMAP with goals and action steps. Showing you how to get from where you are to where you want to be, step-by-step-by-step. ... . The ROADMAP . Step 1 We start off with an in-depth CASE REVIEW I pore over your previous health history i.e. intake forms, questionnaires and previous lab tests. Then, I’ll have a good idea what the root cause is for your symptoms, even before we meet. . Step 2 We’ll connect through a 1-2 hr deep dive DISCOVERY SESSION (virtually) to further identify and understand the ROOT CAUSE(S) of your brain symptoms. . Even virtually, I can still perform advanced neurological examinations. Again, the point of this is to get to the ROOT CAUSE of your symptoms. . Step 3 I build out your very own BrainSAVE! Road Map, and break it down for you clarifying your health goals, discussing your ROOT CAUSE, and laying out each phase of your BrainSAVE! action plan. . I lay out the top 5 most impactful and implementable steps for you to take. This typically involves personalized supplement protocol, customized food plan, at-home brain training exercises, lifestyle recommendations, and recommendations for advanced lab testing as needed. . Step 4 Once the plan and next steps are laid out, you’ll begin your Brain Recovery Program. This includes an at-home care plan with weekly/monthly check-ins. . Step 5 We continue to re-evaluate and update the roadmap until you’ve reached your health goals. . . Why do all this? . Because when it comes to your brain health, I don’t want to leave any stone unturned. . Here’s the truth...so many of my clients seem normal on the outside. They don’t look sick. They don’t look like they are suffering. . In fact...they are often scared to ask for help, because so many have told them they are:... Making it up Wanting attention . But I know that’s not true based off of the neurological exams that I perform. (By the way, I can still perform these virtually ) . In fact, I often see several key neural networks, still under or over performing YEARS after the initial incident. . . I have a favor to ask you: Will you help me in breaking this stigma? . I would love for you to share this in your stories so we can spread this message wide and far so that people know they don’t have to suffer alone. See more
