I was interviewed by #EvePeyser of #newyorkmagazine about the influences of digital devices on the eyes during the COVID era. She was able to include the very recent data out of China which suggested an increase in myopia prevalence as well as my case series of myopia control patients showing Covidnopia. This is an article discussing the experience of 65 of my young patients with myopia who are being treated with various methods of myopia control during the COVID-19 shutdown.. Includes patients wearing bifocal eyeglasses, one MiYo Smart lens, multifocal contact lenses, orthokeratology and atropine with and without the other treatments. While the changes to the visual environment and the increased visual challenges due to the shutdown likely has caused an increase in dry eye c...omplaints and may cause an increase in myopia in children wearing standard glasses and contact lenses, these patients demonstrated extremely low levels of myopia progression over six months of shutdown. It's possible that, given the proper myopia treatment, the visual environment might not have much effect on myopia progression, or remote learning tends to be a bit more distracted learning and this might actually be better for avoiding myopia progression. I was asked to provide a commentary on this article on what types of general and eye health conditions are found during examinations of contact lens wearing patients who say that they are doing just fine. The answer is, a lot of problems or potential problems are found a lot of the time. So, keep coming in as recommended for eye examinations and for contact lens follow up visits and keep seeing well, stay healthy and stay comfortable.

This is a portion of an interview on my thoughts on myopia and how to control it. Main message is to start treatments early to have the best chance at the optimal treatment outcomes.
