Warning: DENTISTRY CAN HARM YOUR HEALTH! Two years ago, after getting a zirconium crown placed on my upper right tooth, I developed symptoms that were classic for Ankylosing Spondylitis. My dentist didn't think it was what caused my back pain, and I managed to lessen it and control it through a very restricted diet, but after getting a second zirconium crown 5 months later, my low back pain and stiffness flared up again dramatically. L...ooking back now, I also realize I developed hyperthyroidism (my first autoimmune disease) 18 years ago after getting my first titanium implant in tooth #14. I had my 3 titanium implants removed in two separate procedures, with notable improvement in my back pain within hours of each removal, lessening it down from 9/10 to a 3/10 on a pain scale. But I still have to maintain a strict diet or I can easily flare back within a day to a 10/10 pain level. However, this underlying increased inflammatory state led to getting a left frozen shoulder 6 months ago after a mild injury, and then with overuse of my right arm, to a second frozen shoulder 3 months ago. Thankfully, I had a manipulation procedure done by a brilliant chiropractor in Canada two weeks ago that was successful. But if a dental implant can cause one autoimmune disease, thyroid for me, and a zirconium crown can bring me from normal health to sleeping on my hard couch for 2 years now (only in the last couple of weeks have I been able to sleep on a firm mattress), I wonder how many other patients who have auto-immune diseases like hyperthyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease, or possibly even diabetes may have been triggered by a standard dental procedure?
