HOW TO MANAGE CHILDREN'S ANXIETY AND FEAR DURING COVID-19 Children all over the world are growing increasingly anxious about their own health and safety and that of their friends and family during this pandemic. The constantly increasing numbers affected by pandemic, changing regulations, social distancing rules and uncertainty of school reopenings have all affected children in some way with regard to their school trips, sports tournaments and social interaction in general w...ith their friends. A high percentage of children have a heightened level of anxiety, some are suffering from obsession and some from depression. What can adults do to help children during this crisis? First of all, be honest and accurate with information when talking to children. It is also acceptable to be realistic and to let children know that some questions can't be answered. They can be told that information keeps changing and virus is being studied by scientists around the world and a vaccine will be developed in the near future. They can be also assured that a lot of healthcare workers are working hard to keep everyone safe and healthy. When talking to children, it is important that parents talk to them in a calm and firm manner. Children should be encouraged to approach adults they trust, such as their pediatrician, a teacher or a parent with their questions. They should be allowed to talk to their friends via phone calls or video calls and share and discuss their ideas and thoughts. It is helpful to be reassuring, but it is advisable to not to make unrealistic promises regarding travel plans and work schedules and people not getting sick in the community. Parents should explain to children how virus is spread , symptoms and safety precautions in an age appropriate manner. It is important to follow guidelines on staying healthy, eating well, getting enough sleep and physical activity during this crisis. Children can practise breathing exercises also during this time. They can choose many extra curricular activities of their choice to do from home. Children who need additional help, who are overly anxious or preoccupied with concerns about corona virus, who have sleeping difficulties, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, feeling overly depressed, reluctance or refusal to go to school should be evaluated by a trained, qualified mental health professional. Please call your pediatrician's office and seek help. STAY SAFE, STAY HEALTHY, STAY OPTIMISTIC LOVE YOU ALL DR PILLAI & STAFF

As the COVID-19 Pandemic evolves, we hope that everyone is vigilantly following social distancing and safety practices to protect yourself and people around you. As states begin to open up and families move about in their communities, it is quite possible that we could not only see another surge of COVID 19 but an outbreak of other contagious illnesses such as measles, whooping cough and other diseases as well. So it is important that parents CALL YOUR PEDIATRICIAN and work w...ith them to schedule well child visits and to get your children caught up with age appropriate vaccinations. We want to reassure parents that we have taken every step to make your visits comfortable and safe during this difficult time. Our staff will help you to review your child's immunization history and to schedule your well check appointments at the earliest availability. We continue to schedule telehealth and video call visits for sick patients and will refer out to medical and surgical specialists as necessary. We know that this is a difficult period for everyone and there is a dramatic increase of mental disorders among children as well. We encourage you to contact your pediatrician and schedule either televisits or in office visits to address your concerns and to get mental health referrals on time. Please schedule behavioural follow ups and make sure that your child is getting medications refilled in a timely manner. As local stores and many facilities reopen, every precaution should be taken to minimise the risk of infection. Please try to stay home as much as you can and keep your social distancing when you must go out. Please wear your masks in proper manner and encourage children to wear their masks and do proper hand washing . We want to assure you that your health and safety is our priority and please don't hesitate to reach out to us for your health care needs at anytime We are open Monday through Friday 8 AM to 5 PM and DR Pillai can be reached 24/7 on her cell phone STAY SAFE STAY HEALTHY Dr PILLAI & STAFF
