A lot of people are reporting election-related anxiety, so make sure you deal with your stress levels and take care of your mental health with these helpful tips. The last tip I want to add is having names of some close friends and family you can reach via text, phone, or video for emotional support tomorrow night. We are #StrongerTogether. It's not about whether you love the other candidate or not. Or that you have a grudge against one party or another. No party is perfect. No candidate is perfect. And even if Biden wins, there is still absolutely work to do. But at this point, you need to ask yourself, which candidate has decency, humanity, and integrity, who will uphold the institutions of science and free press, has the guts to condemn White supremacy, and respects religious freedom while maintaining separat...ion between church and state, and if you care about my safety and security in the least bit, a President who won't try to undermine my life as a queer Asian American immigrant woman married to a same-sex partner, and will in the LEAST, try to put an end to the 200k+ deaths in this global pandemic which is NOT "turning a corner" in the U.S. And I'm also talking to Asian American swing voters who might be undecided or uninformed or too embarrassed to say they didn't vote or made the wrong decision in 2016, or to "break the mold" from their family or community. Many high-ranking Republicans are endorsing Biden. Even the National Committee of Asian American Republicans are officially endorsing Biden. Every vote counts. And help your immigrant parents and aunties and uncles if they're uninformed or need help. #AsianVotesCount. Especially in battleground states! If you need help, ask someone! And it's not too late to vote early/in-person. Bisexuality is not in and of itself pathological or caused by pathology. I need to clearly state this as a psychologist because many therapists and counselors have this implicit bias when working with bisexual, pansexual, fluid, and queer clients. It may come from archaic Freudian theories, misconstrued religious beliefs, or just general binegative stereotypes since only about 40% of people believe that sexuality is on a spectrum, 42% believe there's no middle ground, and 17%... are unsure (YouGov, 2018). But it affects the therapeutic work and it affects your clients' welfare. There are many empirical studies that I won't list here but Mohr, Israel, & Sedlacco's 2001 study demonstrated that counselor's attitudes regarding bisexuality were significantly related to their clinical judgments and reactions to their clients. And this can go for both gay and heterosexual therapists. So gay therapists are not exempt from having to self-monitor their implicit biases towards bi+ clients. And even if you're not a clinician, you might have an underlying assumption that there is something inherently "wrong with" or "dysfunctional" about bisexuality. And there is no proof of any of that. Bisexuality is and was never listed as a disorder in the DSM or ICD. Homosexuality disorder was removed in the 1970s, and you may not know that even earlier than that, Evelyn Hooker did research in the 1950s showing there was no sign of inherent psychopathology among gay men and lesbians, and Ron Fox did meta-analyses in the 1990s showing there was no sign of inherent psychopathology among bisexual men and bisexual women. Fox's research is what sparked the bisexual-related guidelines in the American Psychological Association's Practice Guidelines for LGB Clients. So there you have it. Nip those implicit biases in the bud. Bisexuality is normal and healthy. Full stop. #bisexual #pansexual #comingout #bihealth #lgbthealth #therapists #therapistsofinstagram #psychologists #psychiatrists #counselors #culturalcompetence #continuingeducation #educateyourself

Be honest with yourself. And then you can truly be yourself. And then you can truly love and respect yourself. And then you can truly empower yourself and go as high as you can go. That was how I found my ability to bend steel. Much love and appreciation to photographer Jan Dee Gordon Photography for featuring me and other LGBTQ+ steel-benders (including Margaret Cho, Calpernia Addams, Alex Mapa!) in this beautiful book, "LGBTQ of Steel," published last summer. Check out her @humanityofsteel collection which includes "Women of Steel." These coffee table books are a wonderful way to celebrate LGBTQ+ history. www.humanityofsteel.com #lgbtqofsteel #humanityofsteel #jandeegordon #lgbthistory #lgbthistorymonth #lgbthistorymonth2020 #lgbtleaders #lgbtactivists #bileaders #biactivists #bivisibility #bionlife

Repeat after me: BI+ MEN EXIST. Over the years I've often heard people doubting the validity of male bisexuality right after they've been 100% supporting the validity of female bisexuality. That's called a double-standard, plain and simple. And I hear it most from straight men. And gay men. Yes, gay men who applaud my bi activism and then turn around and diss bi men (btw I know of many men who identified as gay and then later shyly tell me that they might still have attractio...ns to women). If you have a knee-jerk reaction to the idea that bi men exist, ask yourself where that comes from. My guess is the patriarchy, which wants to keep male heteronormativity as the standard and gay men as the distant exception. Bi men threaten that misogynistic paradigm. So bi men are dangerous. See how cool it is to be a bi man? #bisexual #pansexual #bisexualmen #bimen #bimenarecool #comingout #bihealth #lgbthealth #bisexualityisreal #stopbiphobia #stopbierasure

I presented at the Lacpa Convention today on one of my new favorite topics - healthy bi+ relationships! And I get a kick out of talking to therapists about cultural competence and humility and how to become bi-affirmative providers! Usually when I do presentations, I get to take fun photos so I can remember what happened and whom I hung out with but since it's virtual, I have to create memories like this. I'm so grateful to all the people who attended my talk and so appreciative of the LACPA staff and volunteers that helped because it indeed takes a small village to make a virtual conference a success! #bisexual #pansexual #lgbthealth #bihealth #birelationships #gayrelationships #samesexrelationships #gaymarriage #samesexmarriage #HealthyRelationships #psychologists #therapists #continuingeducation

I'm speaking at Models of Pride on Sat, Nov 14th, the biggest conference for LGBTQ+ youth ages 12-24, and it's virtual and FREE! This time I'm doing my talk - "Bi+ Braveheart: The Highs and Lows of Coming Out to Self and Others for Bisexual, Pansexual, and Non-Monosexual Individuals" for the Youth Track, which is such an important issue since bi+ youth are a majority of non-hetero youth. Parents and professionals working with youth are welcome to attend the conference as there is a Parents/Professionals track. I heard this growing up - did you? It comes from ignorance and cultural shame and stigma. But it's absolutely not true. Do your own fact checking. Homosexuality, bisexuality, and gender nonconformity has always been around, and in some cultures and eras, it was the norm or even celebrated. So celebrate - you are normal, you are natural, and you are REAL. #comingout #lgbtcommunity #lgbtpoc #queerpoc #blacklgbt #gayblack #queerblack #gaylatino #gayasian #asianlgbt #queerasian #lgbtmuslim #representationmatters #multicultural #intersectional #intersectionality
