Pool Knowledge (PK) 101- Pets in Pools Aside of the possible health effects certain chemicals could have on some animals, here is some info on the effects you animal may have on your pool. ... PH balance - 1 dog in the pool can be the equivalent to 10 or more people. With that said the presence of an animal will immediately raise your PH level making the chlorine ineffective. Ideal PH levels 7.4-7.6 ppm (Muriatic acid will lower PH) Contamination - Dogs typically carry small particles of fecal matter on their bodies and can introduce contaminants, Recreational Water Illnesses (RWI's) such as E. coli, and need to be treated right away. (Enzymes will be needed to remove the contaminants. ) Phosphates - Your dogs skin can add organics and phosphates, which in turn will increase algae growth, as phosphates are a food source for plants and algae. (A phosphate remover and filter clean will be needed to remove from the pool) Our pets are part of our families and many of them love the water, and can be beneficial to their health and fitness. Just be aware that there will be a definite impact on your wallet due to the extra chemical treatments and cleaning outside of normal weekly maintenance. Love your Pool.
