EARS // most commonly known for hearing But they also serve a subtle, aesthetic role in framing the human face. They also help to support glasses and - nowadays - have the distinct pleasure of holding up a mask.... This extraordinarily kind young man had always been bothered by the prominence and shape of his left ear. Functionally, glasses were always an issue. But then came the masks and he decided it was time to find a solution. Through a hidden incision, the ear was surgically reformed to look like a standard ear and - most importantly - like the other side. He can now wear glasses...and don a mask. Now who said plastic surgeons aren’t helping the COVID-19 cause? COVID-19 // In just a few short weeks, our world has dramatically changed. My medical practice is no different. In response to local restrictions, and to protect staff and patients alike, on March 17 our office decided to suspend regular operations. We will re-open a regular schedule once guidance is in place on how best to safely serve all patients. However, I strongly believe that - despite the fear and uncertainty surrounding this virus - patients requ...iring medically necessary or urgent care should still have the opportunity to receive this care. And I am committed to doing my part to protect my patients from viral exposure and to help ease the burden on hospital emergency rooms. As such, I am still providing medically necessary and urgent care, with options to receive this care both in-office and in-home. This care is provided with all protective measures in place. "What do you think I need?" My most dreaded patient question (even though I love you all ) I don't inherently believe any aesthetic patient "needs" anything. My goal is simple: to help my patients feel more confident by providing targeted treatments for areas of concern. ... But when asked this question - particularly when it comes on the heels of "I just feel like I look older but I'm not sure why" - I will frequently recommend fillers for the temples. The temples are strange: no one pays direct attention to them, but volume loss in this area can be a powerful, sub-conscious signal of aging. Filling the temples can rejuvenate the upper face by making the eyes appear further apart, and by softening bony contours. A little while back I wrote an article for @doximity (link in bio) that got quite a bit of attention. The post - with the click-baity title "Surgeons Are High Performance Athletes" - argues that surgeons would be wise to think of themselves like elite athletes. Why? Any surgeon will tell you that surgeries are physical and psychological marathons, melding body and brain to deliver the best possible outcome for a patient - ideally in a minimal amount of time (anes...thesia has risks). And like an athletic competition, a surgeon should strive to optimize mind and body around a surgery, to deliver the accumulated years of training and experience in the best possible way. This was obviously controversial. Many readers - likely those who just read the title - thought it was a representation from the typical egocentric, self-glorifying surgeon ("you're a surgeon, not Tom Brady) . Others took offense to what they felt was implicit criticism of the institutions that are the foundation of our profession for the narrowness of surgical training. Regardless of the response, my point was simple. Athletes are expected to optimize whereas - shockingly - this is rarely discussed for surgeons. And the performance of a surgery on a person is arguably a more critical event than an athletic competition. Do you agree? This is a short clip of a longer interview about the article. My wonderful patient came to me with a increasingly common complaint - a face that felt more square along with newly diagnosed teeth grinding/clenching and pain related to this (commonly referred to as TMJ). With some customized Botox to her jaw muscles, the lower face was subtly narrowed, creating a harmonious, "heart-shaped" balance between the cheekbones and the jaw. Not to mention her TMJ symptoms disappeared. This is one of my favorite treatments because - in... the right patient - it can create dramatic quality-of-life and cosmetic changes. Sure, I've got resolution lists. And those lists have lists. Sometimes I even make perfect little boxes next to each item so I can feel productive when I check one off But over the past several years, I've settled upon a tradition: a single word that best summarizes my intentions for the coming year. A word can be refreshingly clear, serving as a beacon when faced with seemingly impossible choices and challenges. When those many lists have lon...g been left behind, a casualty of the inevitable onslaught of life. This year's word is "declutter". To physically and spiritually clear away the excess commitments, acquaintances, expenses, apps, meetings, judgments, doubts. And importantly: to not re-accumulate new ones. Why? To make plenty of room for the good stuff. Lazy afternoons with my family. Brainstorming fun new ways to grow my medical practice. Long, meandering phone calls with dear friends. Perspective-altering books. Mind-blowing meals. All the things that make life full, and the very things that are under siege from the cult of busyness and the onslaught of our attention economy. What's your word? #resolutions #newyear #minimalism #medicine #wotd See more

DARK CIRCLES // The under-eye is perhaps one of the most cosmetic complex sections of facial anatomy. There can be any combination of traditional dark circles, hollowness, wrinkling and bulging of fat. All of these issues require different surgical or non-surgical treatments for optimal results. This patient was concerned with dark circles. Some of this was related to shadowing from hollowness, which was treated with conservative filler (on a cannula, of course). ... In the after photo, her circles have improved but there is still a bit of discoloration. This remaining discoloration is likely related to more difficult (or impossible) to treat factors like genetics, allergies or life-style (like sleep deprivation or dehydration).
