Often feelings anxious? You're probably stuck in the future. Often feeling depressed? You're probably stuck in the past. Stay in the present moment, and you will feel at ease.... Here are a couple mindful exercises to help you stay in the present: 1) Mindful Breathing - Breathe in through your nose, and out your mouth slowly. Each cycle should take about 5 seconds, breathing effortlessly. 2) Mindful Appreciation - Find 3 things in your day that are usually unappreciated. Things that seem insignificant, but support you everyday (ex. your bus driver, electricity that heats your food, your ears that let you hear music every morning, etc.). 3) Stretch - Stretch each body part slowly without straining anything. Pay attention to what feels good, and what feels uncomfortable. Start with your toes and finish with your jaw, face, and scalp. Moment-to-moment awareness of our surroundings is a practice that will help cope with difficult feelings and thoughts which can cause stress, anxiety, and depression.
