What are Intramural Fibroids? If you have uterine fibroids, it’s important to be educated so you can make informed treatment choices. One critical piece of information you should know is what type of fibroid you have. Fibroid growth is often influenced by hormonal changes, genetics, and lifestyle choices. There are different forms of uterine fibroids. Each type of uterine fibroid may bring on different symptoms, or perhaps none at all. The most common type of uterine fibroid...s is the intramural fibroid. What Is the Difference Between Fibroids and Endometriosis? Are fibroids the same as endometriosis? While both are gynecological conditions with certain similarities, and some women may have endometriosis and fibroids at the same time, they are definitely two different things. If you are suffering from pelvic pain, then either endometriosis or fibroids may be the cause. You won’t know for sure, however, until your physician performs either a pelvic exam or an imaging test such... as ultrasound. It is worthwhile to understand what is the difference between fibroids and endometriosis in order to get a better grasp on your health, explain your symptoms to your physician, and pursue a treatment plan that will alleviate any symptoms. What causes an enlarged uterus? "Most women associate an enlarged uterus with pregnancy, but that’s not the only reason your uterus can become enlarged. Large, or multiple fibroids, can cause an expansion of the uterus. Some women may notice weight gain, a bloated belly, or a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen; while others may not notice it at all. Many of our patients reveal they first noticed a change when their pants did not fit, or their belly felt full or looked e...xpanded. A pelvic exam or an imaging test such as an ultrasound or MRI can be used to diagnose an enlarged uterus. While some fibroids are as tiny as seeds, they can also grow as large as a melon. Their location isn’t limited to inside the uterine cavity; they can grow on the outside of the uterus, within the lining of the uterus, and can even attach themselves to the wall of the uterus by a stalk. If the fibroid(s) grow larger within the uterine cavity, they may expand the uterus just like a pregnancy does. If the fibroid(s) grow larger outside into the uterine wall, they may press on surrounding organs." Can uterine fibroids cause infertility? Many of our patients often ask us if their uterine fibroids are going to make them infertile. In short, no, they will not directly cause you to be infertile. However, uterine fibroids may make it more difficult for you to get pregnant because they can interfere with the health of your uterus, ovaries, and uterine lining. Uterine fibroids can come in all different shapes and sizes, and they can appear in different areas of the women’s re...productive system. For some women, they may only have one fibroid that they never notice because it doesn’t cause any symptoms. For others, they may have multiple fibroids that are very painful and lead to several uncomfortable symptoms like abnormal bleeding. The probability of your uterine fibroids causing infertility depends on how their size and location interferes with your reproductive system. When you get pregnant, the fertilized egg travels from your ovaries to your uterus where it will live and grow for the whole duration of your pregnancy. The egg does this by traveling through the fallopian tubes. For women that have fibroids blocking their fallopian tubes, it might prevent the egg from traveling to the uterus, thus restricting pregnancy. "Can you have fibroids after 50? While they may shrink once you enter menopause, they can also continue to cause symptoms. Learn more about menopause and fibroids as well as discover your treatment options below. Fibroids are very unpredictable, which makes it very difficult to prevent and determine the cause, especially when it comes to information regarding uterine fibroids and menopause. However, research suggests that fibroid growth is linked to hormones specifically es...trogen and progesterone. For many women, fibroids grow during times when hormone levels are high, such as during pregnancy. On the other hand, fibroids tend to shrink when hormone levels are reduced, such as after menopause. This is important for every woman to know so she could get the right treatment that she needs. "It may surprise you to learn that the term fibroid cyst is actually a misconception. Although uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts are both common conditions of the female reproductive tract, they are separate medical issues that involve different symptoms, causes, complications, and treatment recommendations. As the most common tumor of the female reproductive tract, uterine fibr...oids affect more people than you might expect. In fact, approximately 33 percent of women develop them during their childbearing years and 70-80% of women will have developed them by the age of 50.
