My heart hurts and it's been hurting since I ever first saw discrepancies and how people are treated based on their skin tone or socioeconomic status. I grew up in black and brown neighborhoods. I look light, but I am brown. That in itself has been an issue. Too white to be brown, and too brown to be white. I have been discriminated against from both. Sometimes felt like I didn't belong to either color and also felt like I belong to both. My uncle Richard is so very dark, som...e people think he's black or Middle Eastern! We joke with him, but I really cannot imagine what my dark skinned friends and family have had to endure, simply because of the amount of melanin in their skin. My husband is obviously white, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and he is called a racist frequently by people that have never even met him. It hurts. All of this hurts and I know I'm not the only one. My neighborhood is hurting, my city is hurting, my nation is hurting, and the world is hurting. I agree and support the anger that we all are feeling about what is happening, I don't however support the looting and destruction. I don't have an answer for how race relations can be solved. But I do know that there has to be a better solution. It has been 5 years nearly to the day that our neighbor Roy Lee was murdered in front of our house. While it is not police violence and his death did not make national news, the fact that his murder is still unsolved, shows me that his life does not matter to our Oakland justice system. That is unacceptable.
