In recent news Cheerios has decided it will no longer produce there famous breakfast cereal with GMO's. The article covers the basics of GMO's, but only briefly touches on the potential harm of these "killer organisms". It is important we understand the dangers of GMO's. Although, the FDA says they are doing what they can to find the negative effects of GMO's, it is up to us to make a change and eliminate all GMO products before they cause us harm. Food of the Month Sea Vegetables An algae found predominantly in the ocean, can grow in the shallow on coral reef and other rocky areas. In the U.S. we have typically used seaweed as a fertilizer, animal foods, emulsifiers, and thickeners, but most uncommonly used as food. Sea vegetables have been around for over 14,000 years. Seaweeds are rich in macro minerals sodium, potassium, calcium,... and magnesium, and trace minerals iron, zinc, manganese, and copper. They also contain protein, carotenoids, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, folate, and B12. Examples are sea lettuce (green), dulse (red), nori (red), kelp (brown), arame (brown), and wakame (brown). Green algae’s are useful for amino acid deficiency, anti-allergy, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and cholesterol reduction just to name a few. Red algae’s are used for cellular regeneration, constipation, cleansing, goiter, and headaches.
