I’m pausing all new bookings for a moment. If you already have a date on the calendar you’re good. If you pre-purchased one of our discount/donation days and you have either hit hard times or just really really really don’t want to wait to get scheduled, feel free to reach out for a refund (minus any fees from PayPal or bandcamp) stay safe -p

Today in solidarity of everyone out in the streets protesting we’ve donated an immediate $500 to BLM and set up a recurring monthly donation of $100. In addition to this we’ve donated $400 to Youth Radio, and Text Me Records will be donating 100% of all Bandcamp profits for the month of June to local bail funds for protestors. State sanctioned, racist, classist police violence needs to end. Black Lives Matter.

While everyone has been looking forward to Mondays lifting of the Shelter In Place orders, Covid cases within San Francisco rose 2% this week. If you believe the charts and graphs floating around, the majority of the cities cases are centered both around the mission and surrounding downtown (high density) areas. Because of this we will not be diving back into re-opening immediately. It is near impossible to sterilize every surface in the studio after every session. Micropho...nes are especially precarious since they are both very sensitive to cleaning, and require people singing/rapping/screaming directly into them and sharing them from day to day. We already clean and run air filters, but it's not enough. The production of music often requires a closeness, a shared meal, sweating, spitting, and otherwise potentially pandemic spreading activities. We respect that process and the humanity involved, and our respect for that process is a large part of why don't believe it's safe to reopen yet. The safety of our community is still more important to us than the loss of money, but if you want to show your support for our decisions and help our engineers pay their bills, we are still running our sale on discounted future studio time and our venmo is @differentfur We are also currently offering limited (mixing mastering editing producing) remote work bookings for clients who don't require attendance to their sessions. For those of you who have pre-purchased days, we will begin the process of reaching out to our pre-buy customers for scheduling this Monday. Thanks again for your support and understanding - Patrick Brown, Owner www.differentfurstudios.com photos by Amy Lombard

Did you know Are We Not Men? was partially done at Different Fur? Bowie was busy with filming Just a Gigolo but helped Eno produce the record during weekends.[9][10] Two tracks, "Come Back Jonee" and "Shrivel-Up", were recorded at Different Fur in San Francisco, California; proprietor Patrick Gleeson co-engineered the album. All tracks were mixed at Plank's studio. Since Devo was without a record deal, Eno paid for the flights and studio cost for the band, confident that ...the band would be signed to a record contract.[9] In return for his work on the album, Eno asked for a share of any subsequent deals.[11] The recording sessions were a source of frustration for Eno and Devo. Eno found the band unwilling to experiment or deviate from their early demonstrations of recorded songs.[12] Devo later admitted that "we were overtly resistant to Eno's ideas. He made up synth parts and really cool sounds for almost every part of the album, but we used them on three or four songs."[13] A majority of the tracks were later remixed by David Bowie; excluding "Space Junk", and "Shrivel Up", which had Eno's production still intact. -wikipedia

Thanks to KQED Arts for reaching out and talking to us and our friends over at Hyde Street Studios and 25th Street Recording about the struggles Bay Area studios are facing during the pandemic. We’re still running our 50% discount deal on studio time for those of you that want to pick up some days and help us pay the bills! We’ve been amazed by the support so far textmerecords.bandcamp.com

Some words about Susan Skaggs

Different Fur Studios 04.06.2020

This weekend we learned of the sad passing of Susan Skaggs due to Covid. For those of you who don’t know the name, Susan co-owned Different Fur along with Howard Johnston, and was widely held as one of the best studio managers in the business at a time when women were often left out. We send our condolences out to her family and friends, and all of the old engineers / assistants / musicians who knew her and loved her.
