I took a cousin to the Frick today who had never been there. He was very impressed, but I was very distressed to see a number of very fine paintings from the permanent collection replaced by trivial claptrap.

I went to the Rubin Museum to see the Clemente works influenced by India and was very underwhelmed. But there are some very original paintings at Lori Booksteins that would have fit right in. The artist is Sharon Horvath.

Since joining the Board of the Long Beach Opera, I have started thinking again about theatre sets, which I used to design in high school. Last night at the Magic Flute I started by thinking the sets were terrific, and ended thinking they were silly and extraneous to the opera. I love all the extravagance of opera, but with these I started thinking more about what they cost than what they did.
