Obesity is a major risk factor for COVID related morbidity and mortality. We have been experiencing an ever increasing obesity rate in US for years and its consequences such as increased rate of diabetes and heart disease. Perhaps it is also time to address the silent obesity epidemic and improve our nation’s health. Increasing COVID-19 caseloads were associated with countries with higher obesity (adjusted rate ratio [RR]=1.06; 95%CI: 1.011.11), median population age (RR=1.10; 95%CI: 1.051.15) and longer time to border closures from the first reported case (RR=1.04; 95%CI: 1.011.08). Increased mortality per million was significantly associated with higher obesity prevalence (RR=1.12; 95%CI: 1.061.19). https://www.thelancet.com/action/showPdf

There are more than 300,000 annual deaths associated with obesity in US. Obesity is also a major risk factor for mortality and morbidity in COVID-19 infection.

Dr Frank Ercoli was a gifted trauma surgeon with exemplary passion for patient care and a leader in the medical community. Over the course of the last 27 years as the DRMC trauma director he saved many lives and provided comfort and support to the families of his patients through The Hanson House.
