I am excited to be nominated for this historical appointment as the Secretary of State of California. I thank Governor Newsom for the confidence and believing t...hat I will stand strong for California. Becoming the first African American Woman in this position will be monumental and I am up for the challenge. Being at the center of voting rights and laws that govern this state is a motivating factor in the work I will continue to do See more

It is with great sorrow that we share the news that Dr. Warren Furumoto passed away last week. Warren was an unwavering ally and supporter of the Department of ...Chicano/a Studies at CSUN. His contributions are many and lasting. Dr. Warren Furumoto was born and raised in Hawaii where he developed a love of and interest in Nature. He also developed a life long interest in Native Hawaiians, their culture, and oppression in their native land. He earned a BS in Biology from California Institute of Technology in 1957. Subsequently he earned his Ph. D in Biology in 1960 from the University of California, Los Angeles. Warren joined the faculty of the Department of Biology in 1962. Dr. Furumoto joined the social foment in the Northeast San Fernando Valley working with young Chicano/a youth who were struggling with recidivism. He also helped organize and directed the Latin American Civic Association’s first head start program. On campus, he supported the student and community struggles to establish the Educational Opportunities Program and the first two ethnic studies departments. He was instrumental in convincing Dr. Rudy Acuña to accept the position of founding chair of Chicano/a Studies. He knew Rudy from participation in LACA, the Rumsford Fair Housing ballot struggle and other activities in The Valley. Warren served on the Chicano Studies Personnel Committee in the first years of the department when there were not sufficient senior members of the faculty who were eligible to form the committee. Until the General Education reforms in 1980, Warren offered Biology 220 Practical Plant Biology every spring semester. Using land that is now a parking lot as a laboratory, he taught students soil preparation, plant selection, irrigation and cultural practices. Working in pairs the students grew vegetables during the semester. Later, as the Associate Vice President for Equity he lead the development of the San Fernando High School project. At that time S.F. High was the second largest high school in LAUSD but first time freshmen student enrollment at CSUN was in the single digit range. English Placement tests were administered to student on campus who were admitted to CSUN and given the appropriate level Developmental Writing classes taught at 7:00 am by Ch.St. Instructors so as to enter the university ready for Freshman Composition. The first year 140 students applied to enter CSUN. Warren Furumoto subsequently sought grant funding to establish a program involving student workers helping community members start urban gardens utilizing raised bed techniques. A community garden was established in Sylmar and operated several years so that folks who did not have sufficient space would have access to fresh home grown produce. His students had a one day demonstration day at the Chicano House preparing the soil and establishing the first gardens at that location The Department of Chicana/o Studies mourns and notes the passing of a committed educator, mentor and community activist. We acknowledge our debt to him. We extend our sincere and most heartfelt condolences to our colega Dr. Rosa Rivera Furumoto, their daughters Kim and Li’i, his grandchildren and the entire Furumoto family. May Warren Rest In Power and Peace. (Photo Courtesy of Eop At Csun)
