Do you suffer from dry mouth? The dental term "xerostomia" refers to decreased saliva flow leading to a dry mouth feeling that can be very uncomfortable and difficult to manage. Xerostomia has many causes: sleeping with your mouth open, salivary stone blockages, taking medications on a regular basis for medical conditions, cancer treatments, aging, and autoimmune diseases. According to the American Dental Hygiene Association, there are currently over 400 commonly prescrib...ed medications that are associated with dry mouth. These medications treat blood pressure, heart conditions, depression, anxiety, allergies, and other common conditions. Since saliva plays a very important role in protecting against tooth decay and gum disease, it is important to discuss your risk of these conditions if you suffer from dry mouth. Your dental hygienist can assist you in understanding how best to manage your dry mouth situation to lower your risk for oral disease. Treatments can range from therapies that stimulate saliva flow to mineralization therapies to harden teeth, making them more resistant to decay. Dry mouth is not something you have to live with. Dear Friends of Dr. Macaulay, Recently Dr. Oz featured a segment about the concern over taking dental check-up xrays and the use of thyroid shields. We are happy to say that we have been using thyroid protection for many years in our practice. Additionally, the use of digital technology amounts to an exposure rate equal to or less than a 10-minute walk in the sun. Unless there is a specific problem, we only take xrays in accordance to the standard of care established by the American Dental Association. The value of having needed xrays to find problems BEFORE they get to be large and expensive dental repairs is most important to us.
