End of season tip #3 Don't be fuelish. Fuel systems suffer the most significant damage when not being used regularly. Lack of attention now will will cause premature failures given the fact we have very little to no options with regards to the type of fuel we use. Leave the fuel tank with a 1/4 or less if possible and make sure to use a quality fuel stabilizer like "Stabil" to treat it. It make more sense to top off with fresh potent fuel the next time she's launched. Ethanol based fuel has a shelf life of about 90 days. After that without treatment it becomes less potent and come spring may become a direct cause of an engine no start. We carry a full line of fuel supplements to help offset the evil effects of Ethanol.
End of season tip #2 Flush the Cooling System. For inboard and stern drive boats with raw water cooling systems, thoroughly flush the engine with fresh water to remove salt, dirt and corrosion. In extreme climate areas you should also run anti-freeze into the cooling system by attaching a pickup hose from a container of anti-freeze to the motor’s water pump or removing the thermostat and its housing and pouring anti-freeze directly into the... cylinder block. Outboard motors should be flushed with freshwater and all water should be drained from the engine. See more
Over the next week or so I'll be posting some basic tips to remember that will help insure your next boating season will be on the water and not on the trailer... 1. Start With a Clean Machine. A clean boat will weather the time off better and will reduce the work necessary when the time comes to take her out again. Wash the topsides, bottom and deck (with a coat of wax on the topsides too) and clean all hardware an...d trim. Check for any blistering in fiberglass boats, especially for boats that spend extended periods in the water. If any blisters are found, treat and repair these problems. Don’t forget to clean windscreens as well as any bimini tops, spray hoods and the like. Let all canvas dry thoroughly before neatly storing these away. If possible, remove all canvas from the boat and store indoors. A boat that starts its winter holiday clean will help keep dirt and corrosion from getting a foothold, and will be much quicker to get ready in spring. See more
It may seem strange, but winter time off can be especially hard on your boat. Extended periods of inactivity actually accelerate wear and tear and can contribute to breakdowns next season. Left unchecked, corrosion will spread (remember, rust never sleeps), moisture can intrude and freeze, lubrication can congeal and neglect can take root over the long, cold months. Put another way, if you don’t get your boat ready for... storage the deferred maintenance of a busy season can come back to haunt you come springtime. The last thing you want to face on that first warm spring day on the water is a broken boat! Remember "Boating's no fun when your stuck at the ramp"
I just felt the need to thank everyone who has entrusted us with servicing their vessels for the up coming boating season. That being said PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be cautious out there. As much fun as the boating life style can be never forget the dangers involved. In light of recent tragic events that have taken the life of a fellow business associate remember we're all as susceptible when taking risks. BE SAFE OUT THERE AND HAVE FUN!!!!
What a difference a little rain makes. A quick trip down to Crawdads to check on the rising water levels and all I can say is my funky rain dance done did good!
In light of yet another tragic event lets show some support for our own! To my family both near and far and all my friends both close and distant PLEASE stay vigilant and watch out for each other there's evil lurking about.
After further thought on my post earlier this morning about the cold temperatures I would like to recant my statement. Please feel free to run your boat and what ever you do don't treat the fuel system and don't drain the water from the manifolds and engine block. As it turns out I need to vacation in the Bahamas this next year! LOL.
It's here! The magical number that can ruin your summer and empty your piggy bank. Heed the warning. If your boat is stored outside make sure you winterize!!!
Sometimes proper engine service is needed before it's too late. Don't wait too long!
