Bar by partners: Third Rail, Cocktail Program Pacifico Beer Campari America Skyy Vodka and Espolon Tequila In 2009, La Cocina launched the San Francisco Street Food Festival on just one block of Folsom St. with 20 vendors and 10,000 attendees. Our goal was to both increase revenues for our participants and to increase their visibility and voice in a crowded and competitive marketplace. Six years later, the festival grew to an event that CNN called, "one of the best food festivals in the world." What is La Cocina? La Cocina is a nonprofit business incubator and commercial kitchen located in the Mission District that supports food entrepreneurs, primarily immigrant women and women of color, in formalizing and growing their businesses. The problem La Cocina addresses is inequality in business ownership. Only 30% of businesses in San Francisco are women-owned and only 6.6% Latino-owned, despite their making up 50% and 28% of the population (US Census Bureau). In the past 6 years, La Cocina graduates have opened 30 restaurants around the Bay Area and women and people of color account for over 90% of food businesses at our San Francisco Street Food Festival. The San Francisco Chronicle called us, "the most important food organization in San Francisco." We believe in the power of dreams and that everyone deserves an opportunity to make a living doing something they love to do.
