On This Day: Boulder Dam Begins Generating Electricity for LA October 9, 2020 at 11:30 AM EDT By WeatherBug's Christopher Smith On this day in 1936, the Boulder Dam, or better known as the Hoover Dam, began generating electricity for Los Angeles. Today this dam produces electricity for 1.3 million people each year.... To start with a little background, the Boulder Dam is located along the border of Nevada and Arizona, southeast of Las Vegas. It sits along the Colorado River, a 1,450-mile-long tributary that curves through the Rockies and southwestern U.S., starting in northern Colorado and ending at the Gulf of California. When the Boulder Dam was built, it was the tallest dam in the world, stretching over 60 stories high. The construction of the dam also produced the largest man-made lake in the United States, Lake Meade. The Boulder Dam collects water from the Colorado River using two penstocks, or floodgates, on each side of the river. The water rushes in the gates at a rate of 2,000 to 3,000 cubic feet per second. Once the water reaches and spins the dam’s 17 turbines, the final product arrives- electricity. So how does Los Angeles receive this electricity? In 1936, a major project to deliver this electricity to Los Angeles was completed after over 250 miles of powerlines were built through deserts and forests to connect the two locations. The Boulder Dam helps create an average 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough for 1.3 million people. Besides electricity, the Boulder Dam also serves other purposes. It holds back flood waters, provides municipal water, and provides storage for irrigation during drought for many Southwest states. The Boulder Dam is a magnificent piece of infrastructure that not only is amazing due to its massive size and complexity, but also because of its ability to deliver electricity to over a million people in a clean, renewable way. Another blast from the past: A unique view of a traditional edit bay at Modern Videofilm. I found this today on a D2 layoff tape I was digitizing but I don't recall exactly what this shoot was for. Warner Brothers A&P I believe. Here we see from the elevated client perch their view of the editor and Chyron positions (her name I can't recall) in this neutral gray bay. Looks like a Chyron Infinite to the left of my DESAM 800, GVG-251, GVG 4000, multi-channel K-Scope and one single Sony BVM 20 F1U Sony color monitor. JBL's behind the coverings. www.dcvideo.com

Another vintage videotape recovery this morning on the third-generation Ampex AVR-1 is underway. This machine is outfitted with a MK XX 5 mil head for 7.5 I.P.S. recovery. The color video quality is excellent considering the slow-speed nature of this recording, a scheme originally designed for black & white educational usage (to save videotape purchase costs). The AVR-1 demod, filtering and buffer deliver a superior processing path that is second to none. www.dcvideo.com

Here is today's entertainment: A presentation featuring KTLA channel 5 in Los Angeles. See the RCA black & white and color cameras in action, the remote trucks, the Telecopter, the Mt. Wilson transmitter and the Ampex VR-1000. Note the lack of flicker in the kinescopes and the nice telecine (or scan) recovery. It doesn't get better than this! www.dcvideo.com... https://www.youtube.com/watch
