It's actually a species of greenling, inhabiting muddy bottoms of shallow coastal waters between 100-800ft.... The second fish pictured is a Monkeyface prickleback. One glance and you will understand how this fish earned its unusual name. The adults have a large fleshy lump on the top of their head that looks similar to a primate’s nose. One cool fact is that it's actually an air breather and can remain out of water for 15-35 hours if kept moist. . This 6-7ft Broadbill Swordfish was spotted YESTERDAY swimming just 2 miles off Crystal Cove! . Broadbill Swordfish are reputedly the BIGGEST of the billfish, using its large bill to swipe through and stun prey. They are among the few ocean species that can traverse extreme thermal temperatures on a daily basis, spending their day hunting between the surface & deep water with temperature changes as much as 60 degrees Fahrenheit in just a matter of minutes! . Wow....thoughts on what this could be? . . . It’s actually not as disgusting as it looks! This angler hooked a Giant Plumose Anemone (it’s obviously not happy about being on the boat so it’s sucked up)... . This large anemone can reach over 3ft in height, and when unfurled it looks like a stalk of underwater cauliflower. It’s usually white, but can also be brown, tan, or pinky-orange. When you’re fishing deep, sometimes these guys get snagged. . You can often find this species attached to rocks and other hard surfaces, including docks, floats or pilings in subtidal or intertidal areas and they have even been found in depths of close to 1,000ft!? . You’ll want to use a double dropper loop with #2 hooks & 4pz sinkers or sand dab rig to be successful. Frozen squid is a great bait choice as it’s pretty good at staying on your hook while you wait for the sand dabs to bite. ....
