Dave's Bar 08.01.2021

Greetings Dave's Nation! It's been four years today that our little ship in an ocean of greed and stupidity was dry-docked. Most of us have moved on to splendid new endeavors. We were the best the west had to offer, so it's no surprise we're doing well. Still, I miss our gathering place like I miss a departed great friend, grief commensurate with the love we felt. To all of you, a Happy New Year! Let us roar into the 20s!!

hey all Dave's followers, I want to thank the many, the brave, the scornful of the AMA's directive of no more than two drinks a day! You came to the 30th Anniversary party and made it the party of the century in some low places where the people spring up on their own two feet and make things wondrous happen--or not! But we will not judge! i especially want to thank co-host Ellen aka Mrs. Dave and especially our son Ryan for getting us back to our hotel. Further thanks ...to Mariposa Yacht Club host Glenn Arlands for getting us such a beautiful venue on the water. For those that couldn't make it, thanks for being with us over the past 30 years. If all 20,000 to 2,000,000 of you came it would've been hard on the bartenders. I especially want to thank Colin aka Aqua Lad and his lovely MRH (Marilyn) for making all the signs, name tags etc. Goli and Mike who sold me Dave's and helped run it initially were there as were Ken and Lisa, Regina and others from long before the birth of Dave's. Anthony, Danny, J. Hanson, the impresario Steve Corrigan, the mad Scotsman Bob McDonald who helped launch in "89, Rafael the beer man, Bob the knife man, Max the handicapper and his lovely fiancee, Steve and his better half readying to live abroad (can you blame them?), Mario the shoe repair magician, and so many more that I got too inebriated to remember, but I thank you all from the heart, not for coming to a party but for making Dave's that special one of a kind place: a rendezvous of friends! Good news flash: The Lark is moving out of the Dave's location to the next building over. Dave's will no longer be sullied by such a cheap imitation of a real bar. Viva the memories!!!

On the last night of the late great bar Dave's, I had the profound honor of hugging Merv Williams, our beloved 7 day a week regular who held court at the end of the bar in his "reserved" seat. When the irreplaceable Ray Gun died the torch got passed to another veteran and heroic beer imbiber. Merv loved Dave's and everyone at Dave's loved Merv. Merv has passed. Long live Merv. The Dave's nation adorns your resting place with a blanket of LOVE!

Hello, Dave's Nation! Did you think our 30 Anniversary would slink by unnoticed and unattended? You would have been wrong. We will be throwing a PARTY! WHEN: APRIL 12TH FROM 5 TO MIDNIGHT... WHERE: THE MARIPOSA HUNTER'S POINT YACHT CLUB (MHPYC) ON THE BAY/FIREWORKS INCLUDED I'll be providing more detailed information in the next days but if you love Dave's or are curious or just want to be at the year's best party where the drinks are CHEAP and the food won't get in the way of your buzz, join us. If you didn't or don't like Dave's, please stay away loser. Dave's was born on April 1st 1989 (seems not that long ago), no joke! We tried to get a place near 3rd Street as close to that date as possible. It had to be a Friday because Fridays at Dave's were special. Every day was but especially Fridays! See you there Friends! I for one am having a bit of crisis thinking it's 2019! Then again it feels good to have another one in the can! Oh, hell! Let's celebrate being alive. In '19 let's all go for it! what do we have to lose. We all die in the end, so let us not wait to make our move and see where the chips may fall. Now I feel better. No, I feel wonderfully energized to have been a part of something so much bigger than myself. ... Happy New Year Dave's Nation.

Merry Christmas from Dave's, the Nation's Best Virtual Bar! We still exist in thirty years of memories, most of them good, some great, a few only okay, none bad. Even the tough times were occasions to be glad. We had the best customers and staff in the west, probably the whole country. We ran the gamut, every race, every economic strata, every profession, every religion, no religion, but mainly Giants and Red Sox fans. We were listed in the Red Sox magazine as one of th...e best Bosox bars on the entire West Coast which includes Oregon and Washington. Only eight sports bars made the cut. None of them with only 2 TVs except Dave's. Do I, Dave of Dave's, miss my staff and customers? I do, daily, and always will. It is akin to losing my best friend to the grim reaper. I know everything must die but it still hurts. Love and Peace to all of you who partook of the little island in a sea of commercialism run amok. We now must be content with our memories and that ain't bad! A special shout out to those with me at the outset: Pat and Shelly, Bobby McDonald, Tim Gallagher, Cecilia, Peg with the good food and bad attitude, my gorgeous wife Ellen aka Mrs. Dave, sons Sean, Ryan and Ben who all bailed me out when needed, Ruby Brave Bear, handyman extraordinaire, B. Gallagher, customer of decades, Ray Gunzenhausen aka the Jersey Devil, the Field Marshal, Uncle Ray who by any name would be a perennial customer of the year. We had an amazing group of managers: Patty, Deanna, Helena of Australia, and the incomparable Jo Jo assisted by the stupendous Janice, the O'Js from Dublin town. I cannot begin to mention customers and suppliers who graced our little oasis! Okay I will mention a few: Richard Canty my brother from another mother who provided so much BOOZE!, Quigs, Chris Winter, Raf, Glenn, Glenn and Glen, Allums, big Kenny, Computer Jim, Aaron and Jenn, all the other Jens, Micah in the mornings, (Now I'm in trouble because there are thousands I will neglect to mention) but you know who you are like chef Kevin, my east coast buddies Marcia, Barb and Ron, Carola, Crowley, and I'm in trouble again! Anyway I love you all! We had a good run and a lot of fun. I promised myself I would not mention our narcissistic, ignorant, destabilizing, ally hating, dictator loving, greedy, conman president by name and so I won't. He doesn't drink! That says it all. Cheers to all of you and may the next year be the most wonderful and rewarding yet! Downtown Dave the Aqua Bear

Let me assure all the ex-Dave's gang that being a virtual bar is akin to being virtually non-existent. Not a pleasant feeling for me or you. April first will be our official 30th Anniversary and the celebration will not be at The Lark and that in no way disparages the bird with the same name. News worthy: Colin Hall, husband of Marilyn Ryan-Hall, has lost a lot of weight but is still the same amazing Irishman who as a child threw stones at Bono in Dublin. Even more impres...sive, he's going to celebrate his life transformation by swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco. Anyone interested in greeting him should be at the South End Rowing Club at the end of Hyde Street between 9:30 and 10:15 on the 29th of September. Colin has invited me to join him in this folly and to prove with age has not come wisdom, I consented. So I'll be there also. Hopefully! Rumor has it that there will be a party at the Scarlet Lounge on Friday 10/5 wherein will be a birthday celebration for Dave of Dave's from 7 pm onwards ... Again, it's just a rumor but to determine its veracity, come on down and say hello to the disgracefully aging Aqua Bear. (as opposed to gracefully aging) Viva Bukowski! Viva Dave's!! Down with Trump and his minions! May the Democrats become of the people once again! In the meantime: Help! We will prevail.

Man oh man, Two years have passed too quickly to seem real, but the reality is that Dave's bar died surrounded by friends and family on New Year's Eve 2015! Where are the they now? Joanne opened her own place with two partners, Ollie and Michael. It's called The Scarlet Lounge and is a warm, welcoming bar between 5th and 6th on Clement Street.... It's open 4 to 2AM 7 days a week. Go there or be square! Janice Mayo is studying to become a teacher. She works a couple of shifts at McCarthy's out in West Portal. Her son Jackson continues to delight as her boon companion. Husband Drew plays with the band McCrea's Battalion. I used to refer to Janice and Joanne as the O'Js. They still miss Friday nights at Dave's. Saorise is still at Napper Tandy in the Mission and she is still the radiant welcoming force she was at the little bar that could. If you miss her visit. She make you feel welcome. Val is at Murphy's bar on Kearney St. It was once our competition but not really. We co-existed famously. And Dave's was acknowledged by all to be the better bar. Now Val graces Murphy's and makes it even better than it was before, injecting a bit of Dave's. Traci is now mother to Georgina who looks a lot like her mom. Both are adorable. Husband Tony toils in the liquor business while Trace the Ace works at the Wine Bar. She'd love to see you. Laurann, our wondrous sandwich maker with the joy inducing smile is now running in marathons and 10Ks. In her spare time you can find her at Hoffman's on Guerro@22nd Thursday thru Sunday evenings. Do her and yourself a favor and drop by. Chris was at Murphy's but has moved on to bigger and better things as a bar manager. I'm not sure where but I'll find out and let you know soon. He's doing well and is still an inspiration to me. MRH aka Marilyn is ecstatically married to Colin Hall and just turned the youngest 60 on record and is currently visiting with Colin her mom in the deep south. She works nights at the New Delhi Restaurant at 160 Ellis street and brings a lot of Dave's with her each night Saturday thru Tuesday. We did a baseball trip out of the ND and will again next year. Hope a lot of you will join us. We all miss Dave's and have dreams or nightmares about it not being with us any longer. May the greedy scumbags who stole Dave's sleep poorly for robbing us of something so dear just to make more of what they already had so much of--money! But we'll always have the memories of a most congenial spot, That was not Camelot, But Dave's Which died noisily in revelry Two years ago on this celebratory night! Happy New Year's Eve and a Joyous 2018!! From Dave the AquaBear to you (you know who you are)
