Haven’t taken a requisite hospital selfie in a while. Undoubtedly some of the new rules for support people are frustrating AF, especially at Cedars, but definitely relieved and grateful to be back in the rooms with clients, especially @uclahealth #nicedarkcircles #doulalife #hospitalbirth #2020

Thank you to @ericachidi + @drericacahill who have created this guide specifically for Black women and birthing people to help navigate and protect the birth experience. The data is heartbreakingly clear: Black women in America have more than a three times higher risk of death related to pregnancy and childbirth than their white peers. This is regardless of factors like higher education and financial means, and for women over 30, the risk is as much as five times higher. Wh...ile the recent national dialogue created in response to the data has been a critical leap forward, it has also brought up a lot of fear and questions from Black women about how we can prevent these outcomes. Last year, we sought out resources to help Black women navigate their prenatal and postpartum care in light of this knowledge, but came up empty when looking for a resource that explicitly called out encountering racism during this time and how to tackle it. RG @carriagehousebirth Today is #IndigenousPeoplesDay, a holiday that "aims to celebrate and honor the past, present, and futures of Native peoples throughout the United States and acknowledges the legacy of colonialism, which has devastated Indigenous communities historically and continues to negatively impact them today. This photo of @chrissyteigen at Cedars, there to birth her baby Jack who had passed away, broke my heart this morning. As much as I was moved by her grief, her loss, I was equally furious at the scene. The nurse charting while CT was sitting there, visibly broken like that. Maybe I missed her the hand on her shoulder. Maybe the RN sat next to her and held her hand while CT cried. Maybe. ... This is such a blatant example of the disconnect in the medical system. The focus is on data, managing, charting...not the PEOPLE, or emotions or the sacredness of birth. WTF happened to humanity in hospital births? I don’t blame the overworked RNs. I blame the broken, for-profit hospital system. There is a lot of talk about whether or not doulas are essential. Birth attendants, whether hired or in the form of friends and family, bring compassion and kindness, care and concern, empathy and emotional support. Love. So for today my answer is YES. While doulas may not be, outside birth support is ESSENTIAL. Birthing people deserve better than this. Birth matters. Prayers for CT and her family. #thesystemisbroken #birthmatters #support #birthworker #whereisthehumanity
