My kids were still protective of his reputation, and I didn’t want to embarrass his firm or his extended family. But holding it inside and lying about it to people all the time who would often ask just how Peter died so young started to really affect me, emotionally and physically. It is clear that families are affected by their loved ones addiction, however, keeping that struggle inside isn’t beneficial for anyone. It’s important to know that embarrassment and shame can be turned into a positive action by speaking out about your experiences and opening up so that the addict that still suffers does not shy away from seeking help. You can be an advocate for someone needing help.

According to a July Kaiser Family Foundation poll, 53 percent of adults in the U.S. reported mental health difficulties related to the pandemic, up from 32 percent in March. This is were we as a community must continue to battle this pandemic and opioid epidemic together. There are resources for those who do not have healthcare options and 12 step group online meetings. Until we can make changes in legislation for healthcare to be a right for all we must continue to focus on our communities and outreach programs that aren’t funded by private healthcare.

Research groups have been fighting for years about whether ‘their’ brain circuit is the key to addiction. Although scientists and their efforts for finding the ultimate cure for addiction is appreciated, the addict themselves must want to seek recovery. The obsession of the mind must be replaced by an active program for redirecting their old behaviors that will not lead them to relapse. These two components can unite and provide additional support to fight against addiction and help others.
