Happy December!! I am one of four finalists for a sculpture in San Francisco. Can you please check it out and if you feel compelled to write anything about ANY of the creations for a community center in the Bayview-Hunters Point, please do. There are 8 amazing finalists for two separate commissions: one is the the centerpiece sculpture and the other is for the garden area (where my work is considered) Thank you!! sfartscommission.org//art-proposals-plaza-and-gardens-outd
Blessed to be able to provide ...
Very VERY honored by this recognition of my work...
In Montgomery, Alabama for the dedication of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. I’m honored beyond measure to have my sculpture Guided by Justice here to honor the women of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
All my ladies in a row, waiting on patina. Tomorrow is the day!!!
Almost finished!!! These ladies leave for Montgomery April 6th for installation. They will be dedicated April 26th, representing the women of the Montgomery Bus Boycott at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, funded by The Equal Justice Initiative. The back story for this piece is very personal. The woman with the glasses is my Aunt Tiny, a former school principal who taught in the segregated south. The elder...ly woman is my great grandmother, who was enslaved until emancipation. The third woman, while unrelated to me is someone's mother (who I cannot disclose!) It is an honor to have them represent the strength and character of women who handled what was thrown at them everyday with grace, power and perseverance. The trio represents the importance of caring for and teaching the next generation how to be resilient carriers of the flame of freedom. The sculpture, when assembled with be called, Guided by Justice. See more
Sculptures getting ready for The Peace and Justice Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama.
This is my great grandmother, Luvenia James. She is part of a site specific public sculpture I'm currently creating. Stay tuned for more about what, when, why and where it will be installed!!! Happy 2018 to you all!!!
The unveiling was incredible and packed. Published reports of the event totaled the crowd at 1500!! A large contingent of the Rumford family was there, including his two children, grand and great grandchildren, cousins and other relatives. There were politicians and contemporaries of Mr. Rumford there as well. And my favorite interaction that day came from a young man about 17 years old who was so excited to be there. He grew up in the Rumford housing project down the street from the sculpture. He knew everything about Byron Rumford's civil rights work and brought several friends to witness the unveiling! It was a beautiful event and I was and am so grateful to have been asked to create a sculpture of such an important figure in American history.
