Meet attorney Caroline Lutz From the volleyball court to the courtroom! When you choose not to stop, you can’t be stopped. From the volleyball court to the court room, winning is about perseverance. As a former student-athlete at Michigan State University, I learned that hard work and dedication are an unstoppable combination. A lesson I’ve carried with me long after my days on the Michigan State Volleyball team ended. Now, as a litigator, our clients can expect my best e...ffort and willingness to compete on every case I handle. My favorite part of litigation is competing to achieve positive outcomes for our clients there is nothing better than the hours, days, or weeks of preparation that result in a ruling in our clients’ favor. More importantly, my career as a Spartan taught me how to be part of a team. I’m fortunate to work with a dedicated staff of legal assistants and paralegals who go above and beyond for our clients behind the scenes. Without them, our results for our clients would not be possible. With the upcoming merger on October 1, 2020, I look forward to serving our clients in a broader capacity with the assistance of our wonderful staff. An unstoppable combination. Go GREEN. FEATURE FRIDAY SYDNEY A. SMITH 1.) Why did you become an attorney?... My path to becoming a lawyer was what you might describe as nontraditional. The family business was medicine and growing up I always wanted to be a doctor; law was not even on the horizon. Unfortunately, calculus was not my strong point so my original plan didn’t quite pan out and I ended up taking some time off after college to work and find some direction. After a little more than a year of this, I was out one night with some friends and struck up a conversation with someone who happened to be a new attorney. This person encouraged me to consider law, and his alma mater in particular, so the next day I checked in to it and discovered that they were still accepting applications. This was pretty unusual because it was mid-July and school was starting in just a few weeks, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to try so I got my application materials together as quickly as I could and submitted them. As it turned out, I happened to submit my application right after another previously-accepted student had unexpectedly dropped out, so I received that student’s spot and started law school about 2 weeks later. Thankfully, I soon discovered that this is what I am best at and most passionate about. Good things may take time, but sometimes great things happen all at once. 2.) What do you like to do in your spare time? I have two dogs and spend a lot of my free time giving them what can only be described as an unnecessary amount of attention. I also love to travel whenever I get the chance, whether that means going abroad or even just exploring our own backyard here in the Central Valley. I love a good crossword puzzle and am a diehard baseball fan (go Giants and go Grizzlies!) as well as an enthusiastic supporter of the food truck trend. I also recently got my first Kindle so I am trying to work my way through as many 20th century classics as possible, but somehow usually just end up reading To Kill a Mockingbird over and over again. 3.) Best advice you have ever received. This too shall pass.

FEATURE FRIDAY SUMMER A. JOHNSON WHY DID YOU BECOME AN ATTORNEY?... In college I participated in an internship with the District Attorney’s office. The DA I worked with participated in an early intervention drug program for non-violent juvenile drug offenders called Drug Court. Every week, the DA, the Public Defender, the Juvenile Judge, the teen’s school guidance counselor, drug counselor and probation officer would get together with the teen to discuss his or her progress in their school, home life, counseling sessions and address any questions or problems the teen was having, but to also to hold them accountable for staying clean, going to school and their drug treatment. The genuine support and care the teens got from the justice system in that instance was absolutely amazing and the kids thrived under the caring guidance of all involved. The ability for the legal system to intervene and help people inspired me to become a lawyer. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING ON YOUR SPARE TIME? In my spare time I love watching science fiction movies, reading historical fiction, going to the beach as often as possible, watching my daughter play soccer and going to Disneyland. BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED. Be kind to yourself and have self-compassion we are our own worst critics. sometimes.

The fact that commissions earned by employees can both be delayed in payment and distributed in uneven increments creates some challenges. Under Federal law, an employer may attribute commissions to when they are earned (rather than when paid), or to
