Children with incarcerated parents face the holidays without one or both of their parents, amidst reminders of what the holidays are supposed to be happiness, family togetherness, and bounty. For 30 straight years, Friends Outside in Los Angeles County (FOLA) has responded to the needs of these children during the time of the year that is the most difficult for them, the December holidays. Because of the pandemic, this year’s celebration will be different. In the interest... of everyone’s health, we will have a drive/walk by celebration outside at the location of our fatherhood program in Inglewood. Families will be invited to visit stations where they will receive unwrapped toys for their children (to avoid extra handling), food gift cards, enter a raffle, and participate in socially-distanced fun activities. We know that times are difficult for many people. If you can do so, we are asking for your support as follows: Celebration Sponsor: Your monetary donation will be used to purchase food gift cards for each family and cover other costs such as to decorate the parking lot. Checks should be made payable to Friends Outside in Los Angeles County and mailed to us in the enclosed envelope.Toy Sponsor: Our preference is to receive gift cards for $15 per child to places such as Target or WalMart. The gift cards will be handled by our staff with gloves and will not require as much handling as toys would. Your donations of new toys valued at $15 are also welcomed. We will begin accepting toys the week of Thanksgiving through December 10 at our Pasadena headquarters. If possible, provide batteries for toys that require them. Some children might be victims of domestic or community violence, so we prefer not to give them gifts that suggest aggression (e.g., toy guns). Please do not wrap the presents.
