Wooohooo!!! Today, the BCycle electric bike bikeshare system was officially launched in Downtown Santa Barbara. The bike share system is a three-year pilot program with BCycle, a subsidiary of Trek Bicycles that operates bikeshare in 37 cities nationwide. This program will be the first micro-mobility option offered in the City of Santa Barbara since the short-lived unauthorized launch of electric scooters a couple years ago that caused quite a stir. One distinct difference... between the scooters and BCycle are the docking stations that help tidy up the storage of the bikes compared to other dockless bikeshare systems that allow bikes to be parked anywhere. Initially 75 electric bikes will be available at docks along the State Street Prominade, with a few other bikes located near Cottage Hospital, the West Side and Milpas area. If successful, the plan is to expand to 250 electric bikes extending to other areas near downtown and along the Santa Barbara waterfront area. The electric bikes are pedal-assist bikes, great for novice bicyclists, weighing 58 pounds with a maximum speed of 17 miles per hour and can travel about 30 miles per charge. Single 30-minute rides can be purchased for $7, or for unlimited 30-minute rides an annual pass can be purchased for $150 or a month pass for $30. As part of the BCycle launch, the first 50 annual member sign-ups will win a FREE Electra bike helmet and the first 100 monthly member sign-ups will get a FREE donut from Hook & Press when you opt in for an RFID member card.
