A belated Flat Track Friday post: Brothers Roger, Nicky and Tommy Hayden at Sunset Downs, the track they grew up racing on in their backyard at Earl’s Lane in Owensboro, Kentucky. This photo was taken by Margo King’s husband, Lance Holst, in 2002 when Margo, Lance and Kevin Schwantz traveled from the Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School at Road Atlanta to Owensboro to interview and photograph Nicky for a couple of stories in Sport Rider magazine after he became the youngest AMA Sup...erbike Champion in the sports history and signed with Repsol Honda to be Valentino Rossi’s teammate in 2003. Earlier that year Nicky, Tommy and Roger swept the top three spots on the podium at the Springfield TT AMA Flat Track - the only time in the history of the sport that three brothers filled the podium at an ANA Grand National Championship race. Quite an era and one that launched Nicky winning the 2006 MotoGP World Championship. 69 Forever

Cycle Rider Montclair lost a friend this week and the motorcycle industry lost a true creative genius with the passing of fabricator, tuner and custom bike builder David Miller. Here’s a quote from a friend of Miller’s taken from the Cycle News story in the link: Patrick Johnson, a fellow bike-building craftsman, described Miller: Dave was a sculptor, a painter, an architect, an engineer, a chemist and a physicist. He could explain the inner workings of a motorcycle and tel...l you where to best set up for the next corner. He was a true Renaissance man. Dave was our Michelangelo, our Da Vinci. He molded motorcycles with his hands out of raw metal and saw potential in a design none of us could ever imagine. He was cut from a rare cloth that they don’t make anymore and there are but a few of him left. https://www.cyclenews.com///article/dave-miller-1955-2020/

Cycle Rider celebrates Memorial Day weekend by thanking those who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving their country. The late Nicky Hayden never served our country in the military, he did fly the American flag at racetracks around the world, atop podiums in both MotoGP and World Superbike. Nicky also earned the United States its last MotoGP World Championship. Sadly we lost Nicky three years ago yesterday after he was struck by a car while training on his bicycle in Italy.... He was hoping to win a World Superbike Champion to add to his MotoGP title and become the first racer to win both world championships. It would have taken a more competitive Honda CBR1000RR to help him him do it, but we learned a long time ago to never doubt what Nicky could accomplish when he set his mind to it. Here’s an image that a friend who worked with Nicky from the time he was 12 years old sent to a member of the Cycle Rider family that was instrumental to hiring Nicky to his first paid, professional ride at HyperCycle Suzuki when he was 16 years old. Even as a kid, it was clear how focused Nicky was in achieving his goals. Look at how many of 12-year-old Nicky’s goals he achieved before he was taken from us too soon. Let’s remember the sacrifices of our veterans this weekend and let’s remember the achievements of Nicky Hayden as an example of what we can do when we set our minds to it. 69 Forever
