The holiday season is a time of giving. Children of all ages traditionally are on the receiving end of such gifts. Remember, the thought counts. So does the safety of your child. Make sure the toys and gifts you give to your loved ones are safe. And, during the COVID-19 pandemic you should follow all local and statewide guidelines and restrictions such as mask-wearing and social-distancing. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers guidance regarding safe toys. Among... the safety tips to follow and some gifts to avoid this holiday season: Balloons--Children can choke or suffocate on deflated or broken balloons. Keep deflated balloons away from children younger than eight years old. Discard broken balloons immediately. Small balls and other toys with small parts--For children younger than age 3, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking. Scooters and other riding toys--Riding toys, skateboards and in-line skates go fast, and falls could be deadly. Helmets and safety gear should be worn properly at all times and they should be sized to fit. Magnets--High-powered magnet sets are dangerous and should be kept away from children. Whether marketed for children or adults, building and play sets with small magnets should also be kept away from small children. Like so many other activities and holiday traditions, Halloween will be different in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Make sure to check on your community’s guidelines for Halloween and Trick-or-Treat activities. If Trick-or-Treating is allowed in your community, make sure to take steps toward a safe and healthy Halloween.... The CDC recommends: Those handing out treats should avoid direct contact with trick-or-treaters. Distribute treats outdoors, when possible. Set up a station with individually bagged treats for kids to take. Wash your hands before handling treats. When possible, bring a small bottle of sanitizer with you. Whether you’re giving or receiving treats, wear a mask. Stay at least 6 feet away from others who do not live with you. Get creative and make your cloth mask a part of your costume. But remember, a costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask! Don’t wear a costume mask over a cloth mask because it might make breathing more difficult. Body Mass Index, better known as BMI, is an inexpensive and easy screening method to determine weight categories such as underweight, healthy weight, overweight and obesity. BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. It doesn’t measure body fat directly, but BMI is moderately correlated with more direct measures of body fat. For adults 20 and older, BMI is interpreted using standard weight status categories, which are the same for men and... women of all body types and ages. BMI is determined differently for children and teens, even though it is calculated using the same formula as adult BMI. Why is BMI an important measuring tool? People who have obesity are at increased risk for many diseases and health conditions, including: High blood pressure. High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides. Type 2 diabetes. Coronary heart disease. Stroke. Gallbladder disease. Osteoarthritis. Sleep apnea and breathing problems. Chronic inflammation and increased oxidative stress. Some cancers. Low quality of life. Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety and other mental disorders. Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning. All causes of death. Cucamonga Valley Medical Group encourages its patients to eat healthy and remain physically active. Ask your physician about BMI. Adolescents, high school or college students, and young adults often have a misperception that drugs really won’t affect their health. Such an assumption couldn’t be farther from the truth. Using drugs, even just once, can negatively affect your body and your mind. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, these signs may suggest a developing problem, which youths should discuss with a trusted adult:... Hanging out with different friends Not caring about your appearance Getting worse grades in school Missing classes or skipping school Losing interest in your favorite activities Getting in trouble in school or with the law Having different eating or sleeping habits Having more problems with family members and friends Asking for help is the first important step, the NIDA says. If you have a good relationship with your parents, you should start there. If you do not have a good relationship with your parents (or if they are having some problems of their own and might need help), find an adult you trust to ask for help. The next step is to go to your physician. To learn more visit the National Institute on Drug Abuse website at https://www.drugabuse.gov/drug-topics/prevention
