Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs 21.10.2020

Hey young artists, here is an opportunity to develop your photography skills and get recognition for your talent. Our friends at @gettyunshuttered and @educationamplifier are offering free art instruction to students ages 13 to 19, and a chance to be featured at the Getty Museum. Join each Sunday through December 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Students will learn how to produce powerful artworks that combine photographic imagery and text to convey a message. All students ...will need is a digital camera or camera phone - or even an old film camera, if you like! - a notepad, and a writing utensil. Students of ages 13-19 and their families are welcome! Winning student submissions will be projected onto buildings in cities nationwide and featured in a special J. Paul Getty Museum exhibit in 2021! Held via zoom, sign up for "In Pursuit of ___" here : linktr.ee/educationamplifier

Today we are launching weekly features on each of this year's 17 winners of the DCA Cultural Trailblazer award. We'll get things moving with a look at the multifaceted dancer and choreographer, Jay Carlon. Jay Carlon's performances are inspired by his upbringing in California’s Central Coast where he was raised the youngest of 12 in a family of Catholic Filipino migrant agricultural workers. Two years ago Jay began producing a series of works, starting with "Flex", committed... to excavating this personal history, and reclaiming the collective history of Filipino-Americans and the Filipino diaspora from colonial narratives. With "Flex", Jay illuminated the complex and often erased history of Filipino-Americans, using a large cast to explore the history of his own family and culture through dance. While "Flex "was highly theatrical, Jay’s next project shows the range of his practice also includes community-based work. Jay is developing a project to re-envision the kamayan (communal-style Filipino feast) as a forum to connect the artist’s ancestral culture with local communities. Jay’s work has been presented in Los Angeles at REDCAT, The Broad Museum, Los Angeles Dance Project, Annenberg Community Beach House, LA Dance Festival, Electric Lodge, Los Angeles Performance Practice, homeLA, and Beach Dances; in New York at 92ndY and The CURRENT SESSIONS; Jay has also performed with the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center, Palissimo, Oguri, No)one. Art House, and danced for Rodrigo y Gabriela on Jimmy Kimmel Live (choreographed by Annie-B Parson), in Solange Knowles’ art film Metronia (2018) choreographed by Gerard & Kelly, and was appointed Choreographic Associate for Kanye West's opera, Mary (2019). See link in bio for the complete list of this year's winners. Michael Massenburg, painting 'Above the Water We See the Light' for a new pool at the Van Ness Park & Recreation Center, looks like he is in his own composition. No wonder, since his beautiful mural is a result of working closely with the community. This work and a nearby companion piece are on track to be completed this year. David Stork... The Art of Wellbeing by South Central LA artists. A collection of works that envision COVID-19 safety. Commissioned through the collaborative efforts of the City's Emergency Management Department, DCA and @lacommons Jose Lozano... 'No Tan De Cerca Por Favor' Ink On Paper, 11x14, 2020 Artist Statement: It was fun and challenging to make images addressing this serious pandemic situation we are currently battling. I wanted the images to communicate a sense of community and humanity. I also wanted the images to communicate the seriousness of keeping safe and following behavior that helps combating the pandemic without being preachy.
