Hi Coyotes! October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). NDEAM is led by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). This year marks not only the 75th observance of NDEAM, but also the 30th anniversary of the ADA. Both milestones are being commemorated with a range of events and activities centered on the theme "Increasing Access and Opportunity." We highly encourage you to click on the linktr.ee in our bio, select Res...ources, and open the webpage entitled NDEAM Resources. Image Description: Poster from the United States Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy that contains images of people with a range of disabilities working in various settings. We would like to share with you Microsoft’s article, 10 habits to create accessible content. 1. Accessibility Checker. In the Review tab, next to the Spell Check button, is a magic Check Accessibility button! You can use it to check your emails and documents for accessibility issues before sending. 2. Use Styles to create headings in Word and OneNote so that people who use screen readers can quickly navigate your documents. Using Styles instead of font size, font face..., or bold commands to create headings doesn’t just have accessibility benefitsit also makes the navigation pane and table of contents features more useful. 3. Add descriptive text to images. Descriptive text is invaluable for screen reader users. Take the time to mark images and objects as decorative if they are visually interesting but not informative. 4. Tables are important to get right. Use the Table Style Options, Header Row, and First Column commands to correctly identify if the table has column and row headers. This will help navigation for screen reader users. 5.Color contrast matters. Consider people with low vision. Make accessible text colors that stand out against the background color and avoid using small fonts. 6. Avoid exclusively using color to convey information. I often use font icons to supplement a color choice. 7. In PowerPoint, ensure every slide has a title and slide contents can be read in order. 8. Use the Excel Table command if you have tabular data. It makes content more accessible to screen readers and provides a bunch of one-click click features for sorting and filtering. 9. Use the bullets and numbers features to b break up text. This helps reduce the cognitive load when reading a document. It also makes it much easier for screen reader users to process. 10. Video Captions are important for videos and there are tools to make them easier to provide to users. Pro tip: you can also turn on auto captions in PowerPoint to provide the audience with live captions or subtitles translated to another language.

Coyotes! Did you know your iPhone just got more accessible? The iPhone now has sound recognition capabilities! On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, users receive a notification when a particular type of sound or alert, such as a fire alarm or doorbell, is detected. This is useful because first responders and emergencies are generally heard before seen. Someone who is deaf may not immediately identify that they are in danger. How do I set this up? Open the Settings app and head to Accessibility Swipe to the bottom and tap Sound Recognition Tap the toggle to enable it, then tap Sounds Choose the type(s) of sounds you’d like to recognize

Starbucks has offered the braille card since September of 2011. The braille reads Starbucks on the card. This allows low vision or blind customers to easily identify Starbucks gift cards from other cards. This is such an awesome and easy feature. Would be an awesome gift for a loved one with a visual disability. Why don’t more retail services and stores have this?... #CsusbATS #CollegesAndUniversities #Accessibility #Starbucks #Coffee Image description: The image contains a Starbucks gift card embroidered with Braille that reads Starbucks on the front side.
