#TriumphTuesday Katherine Johnson was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were crucial to the success of crewed spaceflights and NASA's Project Mercury - which sent the first American to space and in orbit. Her work was also crucial to the Apollo program, which eventually landed the first man on the surface of the Moon. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and in 2016 she was portrayed as the lead character in the blockbuster film Hidden Figures.
