This past week we’ve had the pleasure of delivering to three of our 2021 Alumni Hall of Fame inductees (Mary Barlow, Raji Brar and John Means) their awards and commendations! Each inductee is receiving a crystal award from the CSUB Alumni Association, a resolution signed by Kern County state legislators, and certificates from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, and the Kern County Board of Supervisors. We look forward to delivering the same to our inductees who are farther away, Jeremy Gunn and Clark Jensen, soon and sharing images of them! ICYMI, you can watch the 2021 Alumni Hall of Fame ceremony here: https://www.youtube.com/watch. And you can read more about this year’s class here: https://www.csub.edu/alumni/csub-alumni-hall-fame.
Join us this Wednesday, March 3rd at 6:00 P.M. The expert panel features Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (Founder of Words Uncaged), Angelica Perez (Program Manager for Bakersfield College Inmate Scholars Program), and Dr. Kyle Robertson (Managing Director, UC Santa Cruz Center for Public Philosophy). This event is free and open to the public. https://csub.zoom.us/j/89797228191
The constituent called with a complaint: A PG&E electrical box was blocking full use of his driveway. Alex Dominguez, working as an intern for Kern County Supervisor Mike Maggard, was assigned to help the man. Dominguez worked with county staff and the utility company to resolve the issue. He called me like every day for a month and was just so appreciative, (saying), ‘Hey, thanks so much. I’m able to pull into my driveway now,’ Dominguez said of the man. He even sent me p...ictures of it. Dominguez knew then he wanted to make a career out of helping people solve problems, which is what he does as a water lawyer for the Bakersfield firm Klein DeNatale Goldner. Dominguez, the 2021 Alumni Rising `Runner for the School of Social Sciences and Education, shared with students Friday how he was able to go away to law school and why he returned home to practice after graduation. Nick Toothman’s career in computer science started with a love of video games. His dad gave him his old Nintendo, and soon the joy of playing games on the console turned into curiosity. I wanted to know why they were so magical, Toothman said of the games. I wanted to understand how they actually worked. Since then, Toothman has earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from CSUB, secured his doctorate from UC Davis, and begun his second year teaching a variety of ...computer science classes at CSUB. Nick is our 2021 Alumni Rising `Runner for the School of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, and he shared his story of turning a hobby into a career Thursday. You can read more about Nick here: https://news.csub.edu/landing-back-home. And you can catch his Alumni Rising Runner Virtual Talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npi86Jyn0Ac See more
Bailee Cook can’t say a whole lot about what she does for a living. It’s classified. What Cook can say is that she procures parts and materials for the B-2 bomber, a key component of the U.S. long-range strike arsenal because it is so stealthy. Also impressive? It’s her first job out of CSUB, as she told us Wednesday after being honored as the 2021 Alumni Rising `Runner for the School of Business and Public Administration. She's also an alum of the Antelope Valley campus. You... can read more about Bailee and her fascinating work here: https://news.csub.edu/business-grads-career-takes-off. Mark your calendars for the 2021 CSUB Alumni Hall of Fame ceremony, where we will recognize and celebrate the extraordinary lives and careers of this year's class five inductees for 50 years of the university. While we won't be able to celebrate in person, we have very special plans in the works, ones that will allow many more people to be part of it and that will spread `Runner pride farther and wider than we ever have before. That's the only clue we're sharing; we will share more soon! #csub50 #CSUBAlumni #RunnerPride

See you there, and happy 2021!
Hopefully by me getting this doctorate degree that it can inspire others, that it can motivate others, to persevere through those hard times. Join us in congratulating now-triple alum Jamal Wright on earning his doctorate in educational leadership from CSUB! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m6jL05TbqY&feature=youtu.be
We are so saddened by the loss of John Hefner, a dear member of the CSUB alumni family. John was inducted into the CSUB Alumni Hall of Fame in 2011 for his four decades educating local schoolchildren and for his volunteerism, including as a 110 percent supporter of the CSUB Facility for Animal Care and Treatment. Just a few months ago, John led off our list of 50 Alumni Accomplishments for being part of the first youth group to visit Bakersfield’s first sister city, begi...nning a 50-year affiliation with the local sister city organization. During that time, he took scores of young people all over the world to create municipal and personal friendships, something he told us was a wonderful experience that positively impacted my life for over 50 years. Read The Bakersfield Californian's beautiful tribute to John, whom one friend described as a light that just shone everywhere he went. https://www.bakersfield.com//article_c3dd0a38-4ef4-11eb-95
