Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1929, Setsuko was the eldest of five children. After her father’s passing when she was just 11, Setsuko was expected to help her mother with all the responsibilities of a housewife and mother. She dutifully filled this role while working a variety of jobs until her marriage in 1956.
