Almost 20 years into the opioid epidemic, there finally is evidence of significant and continual decreases in the abuse of these risky pain medications, according to an analysis of national data being presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2020 annual meeting. The rate of prescription opioids fell 26% between 2007 and 2018, according to the researchers’ analysis of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an annual survey of about 70,000 Americans age 12 and older asking about their use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. https://bit.ly/3nPqAMx

Use of etomidate in trauma patients is associated with increased inflammatory response and worsening of respiratory function, according to a post-hoc data analysis of a large prospective study. However, while the findings suggest that etomidate’s hemodynamic benefits may be compromised by this increased inflammatory profile, the researchers said the agent may still have a place in the trauma setting under the right circumstances. https://bit.ly/2H913wZ

Between March and May of this year, there was a 22 percent drop in vaccinations of children aged 2 and under who are enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, compared to the same time period last year. https://bit.ly/2Sb0Zik

Disagreements persist over safety of dental anesthesia. Certification or not, Dr. Agarwal said DAANCE does little to protect children like Caleb, particularly when things go wrong. There is a dentist or oral surgeon with a high school graduate who has had a few hours of online training providing deep sedation to children, she said. This truly does not happen anywhere else in medicine. When a physician provides sedation in an emergency room, at the very least they have a nurse with them, and a nurse has considerably more training and education than a dental assistant. https://bit.ly/3jc1i8l
