I love Thailand for its mix of culture, incredible food and friendly people. As a Buddhist country, temples are abundant throughout all of Thailand and each have their own distinct style. My favorite is The Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This is really a highlight for anyone visiting Bangkok. The Grand Palace is almost other worldly in its opulence and makes me feel like I just stepped back in time to the era of The King and I. (Haven’t you always wanted to be... Anna and dance with the King?) I always feel you get to really know a country and its people through their food. No Thai food here in the US compares to the flavors and tastes in Thailand. I love to visit the local markets especially the floating markets outside of Bangkok. It is fascinating to see how people spend their lives working and living on the water. Here as well as the markets all over Thailand are where you get to see the variety of fruits and vegetables that are native to this land. I’m still dreaming of the green chicken curry that I had in Chiang Mai! My favorite discovery is the green papaya which is shredded and made into a refreshing salad. If clients are interested in the local cuisine I love to recommend cooking classes that are offered at many hotels or in conjunction with market tours. This is a great way to learn more about the unique ingredients available and take home an extra skill. My other favorite pastime is shopping and Thailand doesn’t disappoint! Every bargain can be had at the night markets including the ubiquitous elephant pants. The silks in Thailand are so beautiful and scarves and clothing make for wonderful souvenirs.
