If you don’t know Wendy Ansley, you should! She needs our support to move her into the semi-finals of the Ms. Health and Fitness competition!!! Wendy is a mother of five, Kinesiology professor and department chair at COD, and probably one of the most inspiring women in the desert! She has positively influenced the lives of so many students at COD and we are all so lucky to call her a friend. If she wins the competition, she will get $20,000 which she is going to use to improve technology for her students as well as improve the Yoga certification program at COD. Michael Murphy who died in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. ... Murph was first posted on August 18, 2005, and is completed every year on Memorial Day by CrossFitters and Navy SEALs alike. Complete the following movements for time: 1-mile run 100 pull-ups 200 push-ups 300 air squats 1-mile run It takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour (or more) and is one of the most well known workouts in all of CrossFit. APRIL MEMBER OF THE MONTH Our April member of the month goes to this amazing woman, Laura Young! Laura has been really dedicated to her health and fitness through these hard times and we are so proud of her! She hasn’t only logged over 20 workouts this month , but she also joined our 800g challenge, and has been such a positive light in our Shifted community. We asked Laura the following questions: 1. How has this adjustment been for you moving to working out at home?... I have actually been able to workout more at home than I was before the quarantine started. Our busy weekly schedule definitely made it challenging for me to make it to the gym 3 times a week at best. 2. What do you love about Shifted? From the beginning I have loved how welcoming everyone has been. The coaches are always encouraging and willing to offer modifications for the workouts. The gym environment at Shifted is one where everyone lifts everyone up, which has been so refreshing. 3. What would you say to someone who is nervous about starting a work out program and more importantly, nervous about trying crossfit? I would say you are stronger and much more capable that you think you are. You need to have short term goals that will help you accomplish long term ones. I had worked out at various gyms over the years, but was very intimated to try crossfit. I committed to try it for a month thinking, "well I'll go somewhere else after the month is over". After the first one I was completely sure there was no need to look any further for a gym to call home. The Shifted Family made me feel so welcome and the coaches helped me build more and more confidence each day in my workouts. 4. What is your favorite and least favorite movements? My least favorite part of the gym is the assault bike. One of my favorite movements are ring rows and banded pull-ups. 5. What kind of progress have you seen since starting with us? I feel much stronger and more confident in my ability to do the Crossfit workouts. I am able to lift more weight than I was when I started and am eating healthier. We are so proud of you Laura!

Jessica is... one of the few clinicians in the Coachella Valley to be intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and The Refinery offers the only comprehensive DBT program in the desert. Jessica and her team of therapists and wellness professionals utilize various therapeutic and wellness approaches to help individuals, adolescents, couples, and families achieve their goals and create a life worth living. It’s not too late to join our 21- day mindfulness challenge!!! We are only on day 7! All you have to do is check our story each day, and see what task you are to complete the next morning to help improve your mental health. Day 7- 4/20/20: 1. Take :60-:120 of quietness in the morning. Set a timer, close your eyes, just sit and think. You can think about anything you want- what sounds you hear around you, or your breaths. ... 2. Write down someone you are grateful for! A good way to do this is I am grateful for X because of Y (share this with them if you want!) 3. Write down an opportunity you are grateful for- it could be past, present, or a future opportunity. For example, I am thankful to be able to have a child to care for today, or a dog to walk today. 4. Write down 3 intentions you want to accomplish today. 3 things that will bring joy to your life, or things that will make you proud of yourself. That’s it! Check tonight for tomorrow’s mindful assignment!

In light of the influx of COVID-19 (the current coronavirus strain) news, we want to take a moment to touch on some easy ways to keep yourself and others safe, not just in the gym but going about your daily lives. The health and safety of our members is our top priority, and we want you to know that we are taking all necessary precautions to keep our facility as clean and safe as possible. We ask you all to do the same. Make sure you stay home if you’re feeling sick...-to keep yourself from becoming more sick and to keep the virus from spreading, it is best that you take precautions and stay home if you develop a fever, cough, or shortness of breath. Wash your hands often-when you get to/upon leaving the gym, any time you're out in public, before/after you eat. This is #1 suggestion for avoiding the spread of viruses/disease. Sanitize-when at the gym, wipe down equipment THOROUGHLY. Keep hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and Kleenex on hand when in public. Vet your information-we’re staying as up to date as possible through the California Department of Public Health, The World Health Organization (WHO), the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and other state agencies. Stick to reputable sources when intaking information on the ever-changing status of this outbreak. Shifted is keeping in contact with health officials and others in our industry as we continue to monitor the situation. Our very first #memberofthemonth for this new year is Lucia Hilker! Lucia is a diehard Burn class member, coming to the 8:15 class regularly to get her sweat on with the rest of our Burners. She’s been a consistent member after joining Shifted 6 months ago, just 2 months after she had baby Pia! Lucia works hard every class and pushes herself to get better and better. She’s always kicking butt, going faster, and working with more weight.
