Weightlifting belts are needed when moving heavy loads. Belts are GOOD for: Injury Prevention - when you're moving more than 80% of your max, a belt can keep injury at bay while using proper form. More Load - an advanced lifter can increase their max as a belt can help you lift more and make you stronger.... Less Spinal Stress - increase intra-abdominal pressure and decrease lumbar compression, which decreases spinal extension/flexion. Belts are NOT good for: Poor Form - have good form on your lifts before belting up. A belt can help increase the load being lifted while encouraging poor mechanics. Learning Proper Stabilization - if you're just starting out, give your core muscles time to develop. Once you've maxed out your gains, then consider a belt. Old Injuries - if you are in pain WITHOUT a belt, a belt should not be a bandage for old nagging injuries. Address the cause/problem before belting up.
