All three lawsuits filed in Santa Barbara County Superior Court by numerous (former and/or current) UCSB-PD Law Enforcement Officers, paint a grim picture of misconduct within the UCSB police department. Though the filed court documents contain numerous he said, she said instances of the same event, they share the same conclusions that the command team at UCSB-PD and the UC Regent investigation of whistleblower complaints did nothing. https://www.independent.com//whistleblower-lawsuits-blow-/

I just heard the news that Judge Gordon passed away on Wednesday. He was the Judge who presided over the one and only jury trial for which I was actually selected to be a juror (right after I graduated from UC San Diego and was about to start law school). Initially, Judge Gordon scared the hell out of me, especially after he singled me out in open court as soon as he heard my last name. To this day I can still hear his loud, deep voice exclaiming Miss Oxton, you may not kno...w who I am, but I certainly know who you are! You’re Chip Oxton’s daughter, and I know how close you and your father are! Isn’t that YOUR name I’ve seen on the license plates of your father’s car?!? Can you assure this Court that if you’re selected to sit on this jury, you won’t make ANY attempt whatsoever to discuss any facet of this case until AFTER this Trial is over?!?! As I began to muster up a response, Judge Gordon barked at me to speak up because I can’t hear you while simultaneously glaring down at me through the small-framed glasses that sat on the tip of his nose. It was the most intimidating glare I had ever seen, and everyone in that courtroom knew, especially me, that you don’t dare cross him. I gave him my word that I wouldn’t discuss the case with anyone, including my father, and of course I went out of my way to ensure no one uttered a word to me about it until that Trial was over and we had reached a verdict. I never forgot the glare Judge Gordon gave me that day in Department 6, and I’ve admired him ever since, both as a 22-year old frightened potential juror standing in a courtroom being grilled for the very first time, and then later, as a Lawyer appearing before him in Court. That was the one and only time I’ve ever been selected to be a Juror; Ultimately, I was asked by my fellow Jurors at the start of our deliberations to be the Jury Foreperson based on the way I handled myself with Judge Gordon that first day. Having the opportunity to sit on a Jury was an incredible experience for me, both personally and professionally, and it’s one I have never forgotten, in large part thanks to Judge Gordon. While he certainly could be loud, ornery and intimidating, you could be sure that Judge Gordon always told you what he was thinking, so you knew EXACTLY where you stood with him. I have ALWAYS respected and admired that about him. What an incredible loss for our legal community. Judge Gordon will certainly be missed.
