Pandemic Response Committee COVID-19 Vaccine Update The science is clear: vaccines save lives and limit disease. Despite the overwhelming evidence of their effectiveness, vaccines remain a contentious issue with many individuals and communities. With the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the race to develop vaccines, the debate has taken on a new importance.... We know there has been vaccine challenges for essential workers and people of color in the past and these disparities are being addressed with sharing our resources, research, and education on the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine. All of our communities need access to this important protection tool. According to the Public Health Institute, researchers have been working intensely on this type of vaccine (mRNA) for the last decade. They have been transparent with sharing the data; holding hearings; and testing people of all ages, ethnicity, gender, and comorbidity illnesses to ensure the vaccines are safe and protect everyone. These vaccines have only achieved FDA approval after finishing all 3 phases of testing. Crestwood’s Pandemic Response Committee and leadership have confidence and trust in the vaccine and have either taken the vaccine themselves or are eagerly waiting to get the shot. The COVID-19 vaccine is one more brick in the wall to keep our campuses and communities safe! Just a quick reminder that the COVID-19 vaccine is designed to decrease the potential severity of the disease if you get the virus, but does not necessarily eliminate the chance of you getting COVID-19. Once you are vaccinated, you must continue to still follow all of the COVID-19 protocols that includes masking, disinfecting surfaces, and social distancing to help us fight and win the war against COVID-19.

COVID-19 Trauma Reset There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic is a global event with significant potential to trigger multiple, cascading crises in nearly every aspect of our lives. We have felt the uncertainty and have lived with the disruption, isolation, pain, grief and stress that will most likely lead to the development of a long-term traumatic response. Fight? Flight? Or Freeze? These are the responses each of us go through when facing a threat or trauma. When ...confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic threat, Crestwood definitely chose to fight. And we have fought it with everything we had including enacting our Pandemic Plan; ordering PPE; revising our policies and procedures; increasing prevention measures; connecting with each other on Zooms; establishing a screening process; conducting Zoom trainings; researching all new data; donning and doffing PPE; testing and more testing; and now vaccinating while continuing to stay vigilant. Today, we are ready to enter a new phase of our trauma response, we must start to breathe. By making an effort to stop and take time to breathe, we will increase our equilibrium and balance. We are ready to stand strong to reclaim our lives in this new world. We have learned many lessons. We know how to continue to stay safe by following the 3 W’s: Wear a mask Wash your hands and surfaces Watch your space and who you are connecting with Armed with the 3 W’s and the COVID-19 vaccine, we have the most effective tools to stay safe in our campuses and communities so we can stop the fight, flight or freeze response and start to breathe instead.

Crestwood's 2nd Zumba Summit! Crestwood held our 2nd Zumba Summit on November 18th. Even though it was virtual summit this year, Greg Parnell, Crestwood's Zumba Instructor, was not going to let COVID-19 stop everyone from meeting on Zoom to connect and dance together. The Zumba Summit included Zumba Education Specialist (ZES), Eliza Stone, who guided participants through a regular Zumba class, a chair class and provided education and encouragement to our existing and new Cre...stwood Zumba Instructors. We also had the pleasure of having speakers Alberto Perlman, Zumba CEO; Gina Graziani, Zumba Community Development Manager; Marisol Forjan, Zumba Gym Relations Manager; and our very own Patty Blum, who helped kick off the summit. One of the inspiring highlights was people sharing their stories of success and how they are navigating fitness during COVID-19. Even though this year's summit could not be in person, it was still a huge success, filled with amazing positive energy, fun, inspiration and phenomenal dancing! Thank you to everyone who made it happen!

A Message from Patty Blum, Derek Dobbins and Pam Norris....... Crestwood Resilience How do you describe resilience? Is it the ability to get up stronger after falling? Is it the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties or bouncing back? In 2014, the American Psychological Association defined resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, and tragedy." This definition also defines Crestwood.... Crestwood has demonstrated adaptation to adversity in our willingness to approach and mitigate cultural disparities with honest conversations. We have plans to keep the conversations going on how we reduce division while honoring difference. Crestwood is launching an effort to create a statewide conversation and healing group to increase our awareness of cultural differences and opportunities. This healing group represents Crestwood’s resilience and inclusiveness at its finest. Crestwood has also demonstrated resilience in tragedy in our response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Crestwood’s resilience is more than bouncing back, its fighting with compassion, commitment, collaboration and enthusiasm as we wear our masks and shields. We are vigilant to protect the people we serve from COVID-19 with creative solutions for visiting, outings and community engagements. This may be through Zooms or windows with at least 6 feet of distance. We are also sustaining our high frequency of hand washing and environmental sanitizing as we continue to stand strong and resilient in face of COVID-19. Crestwood is truly embracing our resilience everyday through the process of adapting in the face of adversity, trauma, and tragedy. We are a mighty village!

Celebrating Halloween Safely in the Time of COVID-19 This year the usual eerie festivities for Halloween may feel extra scary due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are still ways you can celebrate Halloween safely by following the COVID-19 guidelines to help ensure a safer holiday for everyone, and reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. Guidelines to help stay safe, while having a frightening good time this Halloween!... FACE COVERINGS Since you will need to wear a face-covering, why not make it fun! Have your child select their own face covering, and then decorate it together to match their costume. SOCIAL DISTANCING If you are out, travel only with your household members (don’t forget wear your face covering), stay in your neighborhood, be sure to maintain 6 feet or more of social distance from others, and make interactions brief with others outside your household. HAND HYGIENE Keep from transferring the virus with your hands. When you touch objects or your face, the virus may be lurking, so wash your hands often and have hand sanitizer handy. Be sure to clean/disinfect high-touch surfaces. Also, have everyone wait to dig into the candy until hands are clean before unwrapping the candy, and then again before eating the candy. Do not share costume props or food. TRICK-OR-TREATING This year trick-or-treating and Halloween parties are strongly discouraged in California because they present a high risk of spreading COVID-19.The new California Halloween guidance, which also includes recommendations for safely celebrating Día de los Muertos, suggests that families find safer ways to celebrate. CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN CREATIVELY These ideas will help you and others be extra safe while still celebrating Halloween. Host a virtual Halloween watch party with online video/chat and have best costume or craft project contests; Have a Halloween movie night with household members either at home or drive-in; Do reverse trick-or-treat by dropping off small gift bags on your neighbor’s porch; Organize a neighborhood car parade. Happy Halloween!!

Zoom Etiquette Due to COVID-19, meetings and interviews are now being held online through video conferencing such as Zoom. Remember to plan your video-conference connections with others the way you would if the meeting was in person. Everything on the screen is part of that connection. Consider the non-verbal messages of slouching in your chair rather than sitting with an alert posture. Let your creativity soar as you consider how to develop rapport and a virtual healing spac...e. Here are a few helpful tips on ensuring your participation in a Zoom meeting is a success. Be on time. The best practice is to log-in to the session a few minutes early to ensure you are ready to begin at the scheduled time. Arrange your space to have as much privacy as possible. Plan ahead to minimize distractions such as noise and interruptions. This includes notification sounds from your computer. Sit in a professional posture, position yourself at a desk, couch or kitchen island. Do not sit or lay on a bed. Be mindful of your background. Don’t have pictures of content that are unprofessional or might be triggering i.e. an alcohol poster. Ensure you are not in front of a window, as the back light will make it difficult for other video call attendees to see you. Put other technology away, set it to Do Not Disturb, or turn off your ringer. Be sure you are appropriately dressed. Consider having a snack or going to the restroom ahead of time so you can be fully present during the session.
