This #tbt is in honor of retired Sgt. Rodney Haddock, who we are saddened to share, passed away in early February in Utah, where he was residing. Haddock, a Vietnam veteran, began his career with CMPD in January 1973. In 1977, he promoted to senior police officer and later to sergeant in 1979. After almost 17 years of service, he medically retired in 1989. He was one of the department’s last sergeants to supervise the Records Bureau before the position was civilianized. Every time we walk out the back doors of the department, we pass this picture, circa late 70s to early 80s, hanging on the wall of then-Senior Officer Haddock conducting a motorcycle demonstration at an annual bicycle rodeo.
It’s important to always be aware of your surroundings and to enter intersections cautiously. -*- Earlier today, officers responded to traffic collision on southbound Newport Boulevard. A Lynch ambulance with lights and sirens was driving a patient and clearing the intersection of Newport Blvd and Fair Drive, when a driver collided with the ambulance. Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue responded to assess and treat the injured. The driver and two ambulance employees were transported to a nearby hospital with mild to moderate injuries. The patient was also transported to the hospital. No drugs or alcohol are suspected and no arrests were made. #drivesafely

#tbt in honor of our two most recent retirees: Officer Rob Dimel and Officer Jon Doezie in their first Department photos.
On Tuesday morning, officers responded to a call for assistance at a residence. When officers arrived at the scene, they found four adults in their 30s. They recognized one of the men as suspect in a robbery that had occurred the day before at a hotel room, as well as another robbery from the previous week. The second suspect from the hotel robbery was also there. The third man was on parole and had methamphetamine on him. The fourth was a woman who had a warrant out for grand theft. Officers found stolen property and drugs inside the residence. With the assistance of K9 Bodi, the gun used in both robberies was also located. All 4 were arrested, drugs were taken off the street, and that’s one less felon with a gun. #sameguyintworobberies #gotcha #saynotodrugs
We send our thoughts and prayers to the California Highway Patrol and Officer Ornelas’ family, friends, and community. On November 23, 2020, at approximately 7:05 pm, Officer Ornelas was riding his departmental motorcycle when a motorist pulled from the right shoulder to make a U-turn directly in his path. Officer Ornelas’ motorcycle struck the other vehicle, causing him to be thrown from his motorcycle. Officer Ornelas was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital in La...ncaster. Despite significant life-saving efforts by medical personnel, on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Officer Ornelas succumbed to his injuries. Officer Ornelas is survived by his wife, mother, father, brother, and sister. Officer Ornelas was a member of the Department for four years. #officerornelas #21685 #californiahighwaypatrol #chp #eow CHP Antelope Valley

On Tuesday, at approximately 5am, a witness observed and reported two subjects forcing open a garage door at a complex. The suspects were described as wearing dark clothing and hooded sweatshirts. As officers arrived, they saw a black Dodge station wagon leaving the complex. Officers stopped the vehicle, which was occupied by two males wearing dark sweatshirts. The person who reported the burglary returned to the scene and identified one of the suspects and the vehicle. A sea...rch of the vehicle revealed stolen property taken from the garage. Officers recovered a skateboard, electronic devices, a bank check, photographs, and other personal effects. Juan Zeledon, 37, Anaheim, and Raymond Gonzales, 36, Garden Grove, were then arrested and booked for burglary. The personal items were identified and returned to the rightful owners. We would like to thank the observant caller who reported the burglary and provided information leading to the identification of the suspects and the recovery of stolen property. We encourage Costa Mesa residents to report suspicious activity by calling 911 for emergencies and crimes in progress, or (714) 754-5252 for non-emergencies. #seesomethingsaysomething #burglaryarrest

Over the weekend, officers responded to a resident wanting to report a suspicious female attempting to steal a bicycle. During the contact, the reporting family told us that their vehicle was broken into. Some of the items included mom’s clothing and daughter’s school backpack and school Chromebook. Officers were able to locate the suspect, who was still in possession of the stolen items. The suspect was arrested for possession of stolen property and drug related charges. Th...e backpack had to be thrown away because there was drug paraphernalia inside of it. Officers pitched in to buy her a new backpack and filled it with some goodies including our PD teddy bear . Check out our story! #mondaymotivation #communitylove #makethemsmile
Congratulations to newly promoted Communications Supervisor JoAnna Phipps! Since 2008, she has answered the call for help from our community. For all those that have called us to report a crime or ask for police to respond in an emergency, you might know her by voice as the calm in the storm. Today she got her badge pinned and was sworn in by Chief Glass. JoAnna was born and raised in Whittier. She attended Cal State University, Fullerton, where she earned her Bachelor of A...rts degree in Political Science. Her love of law enforcement started as a police explorer and cadet with the Whittier Police Department in 2001. She was hired by CMPD in 2008 as a communications officer. In 2017, she was selected to be a communications training officer and has been an integral part of the training program. JoAnna promoted in 2018 to a senior communications officer, where she has received numerous accolades for her teamwork, exemplary work ethic, and professionalism. Today, she thanked her husband and children for all their love and support. Please join us in congratulating JoAnna on this great career milestone!

Today is Law Enforcement Records and Support Personnel Day! The Records Bureau is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Every day, our Records and Support team provide exceptional service and play a vital role in this organization. The Records Bureau secures police reports and enters data into various automated systems, provides important up-to-date information to officers out in the field, oversees the release of towed vehicles in Costa Mesa, confirms warrants for other agencies, maintains teletypes for the department, and takes calls from the public. How do they do it all!? Thank you for all you do!
