Mia and I are thrilled to announce the Bonta California Progress Foundation scholarship awardees have been selected. The purpose of this scholarship is to promo...te greater access to higher education and provide tangible resources for high school seniors and first year college students who have overcome significant obstacles, maintain a record of high academic achievement, demonstrate leadership in service to their communities, and who would benefit from additional support to realize a higher education. This year’s recipients distinguished themselves in their remarkable accomplishments. I want to share the stories of three of our very deserving recipients: 1) From Oakland, this Asian American student grew up with immigrant parents and a younger sibling. Their family’s struggles with war and domestic violence motivated them to advocate for marginalized communities, lead workshops to support vulnerable youth, and fight against racial disparities in their own high school. This student looks forward to continuing their education and pursuing a career focused on social justice and art-activism. 2) From Alameda, this awardee is deeply passionate about using technology to solve pressing problems, has won numerous awards for their scientific smarts and commitment to sustainability, and will be studying Computer Science and Government at Harvard this fall. The awarding committee was particularly impressed with this portion of the submission: Whether it’s building robots that can rescue hurricane survivors or developing AI that can track the deteriorating pattern of our climate, I’ll implement my engineering prowess to improve society and make resources more accessible for those who need them. 3) From San Leandro, this awardee has extensive extracurricular and community service experience in the East Bay including promoting local cultural enrichment efforts, registering community members to vote, and mentoring a diverse community of children in Oakland. Inspired by a trip to their parent’s village in China, this awardee’s goal is to receive their Master’s Degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley and provide basic resources, such as health care, to people in impoverished environments. Respectively, these three outstanding recipients will receive $5,000, $2,500 and $2,500 in scholarship awards. An additional 19 exemplary students will receive scholarships in the amounts of either $1,000 or $500. The Bonta California Progress Foundation scholarship is administered by an independent board that is responsible for selecting the recipients and award amounts. Mia and I support the mission of the foundation and the scholarship, but were not involved in making the awarding decisions. Established in 2017 by Rob and Mia Bonta, the Bonta California Progress Foundation’s purpose is supporting communities, organizations, and individuals that lift up the social, economic, educational, civic, and environmental well-being of Californians and advance progressive values in California and around the world. To reach foundation representatives, please email [email protected] for more information.
