Disasters don’t wait. Make sure you are prepared today. Make an emergency plan and think about what you would need to take with you in a disaster, including considerations to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

E37 was dispatched Sunday as part of a strike team to assist with the Valley Fire. Today, they were released from the Valley fire and are now enroute to assist with fighting the Creek Fire near Fresno. As part of the state wide mutual aid program, their deployment can last up to 14 days. During that time, Coronado Fire Department will utilize current personnel and apparatus to ensure there is no impact in service to the City of Coronado.

Under normal circumstances, the Coronado Fire Department would hold a remembrance ceremony today for those who lost their lives 19 years ago on this day. As we face today’s new challenge presented by COVID-19, we remember the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, 8 paramedics, 125 members of of the military at the Pentagon, 246 souls aboard Flight 93, 2606 people in the towers who lost their lives. In lieu of a formal ceremony, our on duty crews climbed the CHS bleachers 43 times equivalent to the 110 stories FDNY firefighters climbed at the towers that day. Also, as a crew of Coronado firefighters were released from the Valley Fire, a short ceremony was held with members from the two strike teams who are now headed to assist with the Creek Fire. We will never forget...

A career in the fire service is one of the most rewarding opportunities possible. We love what we do. To serve others and have a positive impact each day as we help resolve a variety of emergency scenarios is unlike most any other profession. The smiles on the faces of those we have helped says it all. A career in the fire service does however have some associated risks for the members. These include physical and emotional trauma, as well as illnesses. Not widely understood ...in the community, but research has shown an increased occurrence rate of cancer among the members of the fire service. One study by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health focused on firefighter cancer and concluded that firefighters face a 9 percent increase in cancer diagnoses, and a 14 percent increase in cancer-related deaths, compared to the general population in the U.S. There have been several more recent studies that have validated this as well. To bring attention to this issue affecting the fire service our Fire Chief, Jim Lydon, recently completed a bicycle ride from Sausalito (north end of the Golden Gate Bridge) to the Santa Monica Pier. Approximately 480-miles in just six days. The event is normally a large group ride sponsored by FIRE VELO. The event serves as a fundraiser to support several organizations committed to research and increasing cancer prevention/support efforts in the profession. Unfortunately, due to the current circumstance this group event was cancelled. The Chief, along with a former coworker from Northern California, opted to take the journey anyway to do their part for the cause. They were supported occasionally by other riders (fire service members) that joined them for part of their ride. For the Chief this was a significant personal journey and accomplishment, as he himself is undergoing current treatment. The opportunity to demonstrate the importance of diet and exercise, even accomplishing a significant physical event such as this, during ongoing treatment is extremely important for others to see. The treatment journey, as well as the bicycle riding, continues for the Chief. He has indicated that he is looking forward to next year when he can do the same trip, hopefully with the larger group. The Coronado Fire Department currently has one member deployed on an overhead assignment as a fire line paramedic, assigned to the SQF Complex burning near the Sequoia National Forest. The fire is now approximately 22,000 acres . A fire line paramedic is responsible for treating injured firefighters out on remote areas of the fire line and provide first aid when needed. This is a great example of your local firefighters assisting statewide battling California’s many wildfires.

E37 has been deployed to the #lakefire as an immediate need strike team (6430A). The fire started this afternoon at approximately 3:40 PM and has grown to 10,000 acres with 0% containment. Extreme heat and low humidity will play a huge factor over the next few days. Please keep all these firefighters in your thoughts while they battle yet another large fire in the State. UPDATE: Strike team 6430A was released and sent home early this morning. Please keep those firefighters still deployed in your thoughts. Thank you for all your support!

On July 7th, the Coronado fire department received a medical aid call for a woman having a seizure. When we arrived at the scene, we found the patient lying on the floor in cardiac arrest. Because of the crews valiant efforts and hard work, they were able to get her to the hospital with a beating heart. Normally, this is where our contact with the patient ends and we leave the hospital to resume running calls in the community. Two days ago, we received a call from a woma...n asking for the crew that was working that day. After confirming they were on duty, she went on to ask if she could meet the crew that performed CPR on her. While we are proud to say that we are generally successful in getting patients out of cardiac arrest, it’s not every day they are able to walk out of the hospital and meet us in less than a month! Prior to our arrival, her family performed hands-only, bystander CPR and greatly improved her chances of surviving and recovering. Stories like this are why we advocate so strongly that people learn and perform bystander CPR, and why we offer and teach CPR courses. It is also one of the biggest reasons we got into this profession in the first place. Excellent job to everyone involved.

Each year, June 1-7 is National CPR and AED awareness week. The idea is to highlight the life-saving difference that can be made if more people know and preform CPR and use AEDs. Many changes have been made in the last several years to help motivate people to perform CPR when cardiac related events occur, including the emergence of hands-only CPR. We hope you enjoy our short video illustrating how to preform high quality hands-only CPR in our community. Remember, if yo...u see someone suddenly collapse: 1. Call 911 and get and AED 2. Push hard and fast in the middle of the chest. See more
