Coral reefs are often referred to as the medicine chests of the sea. A number of creatures found on reefs produce chemical compounds that have been isolated for human applicationsand many more are yet to be discovered. Scientists have developed treatments for cardiovascular diseases, ulcers, leukemia, lymphoma, and skin cancer, all from chemicals in reef plants and animals. Other compounds reduce inflammation, kill viruses, and relax muscles. #coralreefs #healthcare #medicine #health #wellness #cancer #cancersucks #heartdisease #savecoralreefs #lifesaver #underwater #nature #animals #environment #natureheals

Let’s talk about #symbiosis (part 2)! Another common symbiotic relationship we see on the reef happens between the #anemone and the #clownfish, or #Nemo fish as many people like to call them! They live symbiotically because the anemone protects the clownfish from predators and gives it shelter since the clownfish are immune to the anemone’s stinging tentacles. In return, the clownfish provides the anemone with nutrients and protection from predators. #coralreefs #nature #animals #underwater #ocean #sealife #marinelife #justkeepswimming #homesweethome #relationshipgoals

Let’s talk about #symbiosis! Symbiosis happens when two species have a mutually beneficial relationship. This phenomenon occurs often on the reef. Living within #coral polyps are small algae called #zooxanthellae that help the corals get oxygen and nutrients through #photosynthesis. In return, the coral polyps provide the algae with shelter. What a perfect pair!
