On this day 140 yrs ago in California History, we lost Joshua Abraham Norton (Feb 4th 1818-Jan 8th, 1880), known to all in San Francisco as Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector Mexico! It’s said up to 10,000 people lined the streets to pay homage to his funeral parade. He has been immortalized by characters written by Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson.
