It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas! Every year at Fresno Yosemite International Airport the super talented designer Kathy Burk decks the airport for the holidays. This year she dedicated the theme to first responders, we were so honored that she used our medical supplies as ornaments, what an awesome concept and beautiful ode to all of us who work and serve in Healthcare! @ Compassionate Care Home Health and Hospice Agency

They say purpose and adaptability are the secrets to happiness. This company, this cause, each member of our team, each patient and every community partner has given our lives an irreplaceable sense of purpose. The PDGM x COVID curveball forced us all to adapt in ways no one thought was possible. But we did it. Together, as a team. As the year winds down and in the spirit of the season, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who make Comp...assionate Care happen day in and day out. You have helped build this agency into an establishment our community depends on when times are tough and when the journey ends. We can’t think of a more noble or worthwhile purpose on this planet for any of us. And for that we are deeply humbled and thankful in ways which words can’t quite describe. With Love and Gratitude, The Compassionate Care Team #HappyThanksgiving

Before you start eating everything in sight to help cope with the tunes of family-dysfunction this holiday season, let's not forget our health! When is the last time you got your A1C (average blood sugar) checked? There is no better time to find out than now - during National Diabetes Month - as about 7.3 million Americans go undiagnosed, 28.6% of our seniors have it and 88 million have prediabetes. #NationalDiabetesMonth Diabetes is manageable so let's aim to have our A1...C, blood pressure and cholesterol in a healthy range as we gear up for the holidays! As an agency we address the following with our patients: check blood sugar at every visit if you or your caregiver have not done so already. teach you and your caregiver how to correctly use glucose monitors. check if your current medications are managing blood sugars. educate on proper foot care to prevent diabetic wounds. educate on oral hypoglycemics educate on insulin and insulin administration. educate on blood sugar parameters and what to do in the event that you experience hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia (high and low blood sugar, respectively). @ Compassionate Care Home Health and Hospice Agency

Bad to the bone, huh? Well, today is World Osteoporosis Day, so here’s a little reminder to avoid brittle and bad bones! If you are susceptible to osteoporosis we encourage you to get a bone density scan or a FRAX test. DIY practices that may help curtail the disease include boosting core strength (to improve balance and thus decrease falls) and performing weight bearing exercises (walking, dancing, yoga, etc). Make sure you are getting enough Calcium and Vitamin D in your diets. Try to stick with a Mediteranian based diet composed of lean meats, olive oil, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Of course, smoking is always strongly discouraged! #WorldOsteoporosisDay @ Compassionate Care Home Health and Hospice Agency

Mia, what is hospice?, I asked my 11-year-old daughter. "I don't know what you mean, mom" she answered. So I continued, "Mia, what does mommy do for work?" She said "you take care of people who are dying and their families so that they are comfortable and not alone. I was touched by her reply; the simple interpretation of the world through the eyes of a child often leads to profound realizations. Her accurate observation of my career as the Administrator of Compassionate ...Care’s Hospice branch prompted me to lookup care - the second half of our company namesake and philosophy. The first definition I found online was the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something. And that is exactly what we do each day; providing care for our patients and their families. In honor of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, I’d like to thank everyone who has come on board to help realize this mission of providing the best care to those who need it most. Our vision from the very beginning has been to provide compassionate, high quality hospice care that will ultimately lead to the least amount of suffering for our patients - while providing loving support and positive closure for the families we serve. Please call me if you or a loved one may need hospice care, my team and I are ready to help assess the situation and provide the services you need and deserve. Sincerely, Cristiane Kasdorf Vega. Your liver is the only organ in the body that can completely regenerate. If you removed 75% of your liver the remaining liver could regenerate itself into a full size liver in only 8 to 15 days. National Liver Awareness Month brings awareness about liver disease and how to protect the organ that performs over 200 important functions in our bodies. Help your liver help you by watching your weight, eating a healthy diet (from all the food groups), limiting your alcohol intake, ...not smoking and exercising regularly. Some contributing risk factors include things you've all heard before like alcohol consumption (which can lead to cirrhosis), obesity, Type 2 diabetes, family history, IV drug use or even Tylenol (remember not to mix alcohol with Tylenol because it may induce hepatotoxicity). There are some contributing risk factors you might not know about like sugars (including high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners), various supplements, exposure to certain chemicals and toxins - even exposure to other people’s blood and fluids (Hepatitis A, B & C). Lets encourage those with risk factors to get proper screening and regular check ups because early detection can double the rate of survival. Long live the Liver! #NationalLiverAwarenessMonth

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Did you know that about 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime? And it's not just women, a man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 883. These numbers have influenced the need for early detection and screening. In the spirit of awareness, October 16th is National Mammography Day so mark your calendars! A mammogram is an effective screening tool that can identify a problem before th...ere are any outward physical signs. It is important for everyone to know their risk, recognize the signs and symptoms and conduct self examinations because early detection is the best defense. In order to forge a future free of breast cancer deaths, programs and research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis and treatment and cure are needed. We also take the time this month to honor those who have perished from the disease as well as the courageous survivors who are still fighting it. #BreastCancerAwareness Check out this video on how to perform a self examination: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkPR4ar1EQ4

Whitney Houston skillfully asked where do broken hearts go. Well, most of them end up in the ER. Every year 31% of all the deaths in the world are due to Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) making broken hearts the leading cause of death on the planet. On September 29th, World Health Day, let's call attention to things we can do to combat the risk factors and control CVDs. Here are a few tips that encourage a heart healthy lifestyle and help people live longer, better lives: ...Control your blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for CVD. Get your blood pressure checked regularly - at least once a year. Keep your cholesterol and triglyceride levels under control. High levels of cholesterol can clog your arteries and raise your risk of coronary artery disease and heart attack. Lifestyle changes and medicines (if needed) can lower cholesterol. Healthy weight. Obesity can increase your risk for CVD. This is mostly because they are linked to other CVD risk factors, including high blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, etc. Healthy diet. Limit saturated fats, added sugars and foods high in sodium. Regular exercise. Exercise strengthens your heart and improves circulation. It also helps you maintain a healthy weight and lower cholesterol along with blood pressure. All of these can lower your risk of CVD. Limit alcohol. Drinking raises blood pressure and adds extra calories, which may cause weight gain. Both of those raise your risk of CVD. Don't smoke. Cigarette smoking raises blood pressure and puts you at higher risk for CVD and stroke. Manage stress. Stress can raise your blood pressure; extreme stress can trigger a heart attack. Exercise, listening to music and meditation are all proven stress hacks. Manage diabetes. Diabetes doubles your risk of diabetic CVD. Make sure that you get enough sleep. Lack of appropriate sleep raises your risk of high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. #WorldHeartDay
