SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH SAFETY-NET GRANTS December 11, 2020 In March when schools sent our children home, we couldn’t have anticipated what was ahead for the young people in our community. Social distancing, remote learning, and the collective anxiety of the pandemic create an unsettling atmosphere for our kids. Schools are just one of the many necessary components of a community safety-net to ensure our most vulnerable residents are cared for. We believe that with the strai...n of the pandemic safety-net organizations are experiencing an increased demand for services, while stretching limited funding. This is why we created the Safety-Net Grant as part of our COVID-19 Non-Profit Relief Program to support these critical organizations as they help care for our residents, young and old... We are living through unusual and challenging times, but the gratitude we feel for the work we do each day lifts us up. The trust of our donors to steward their philanthropic dreams into reality emboldens our sense of purpose. The relationships we have with our non-profit community, who share with us their trials and triumphs, rewards us with a sense of fulfillment knowing each dollar finds its way to becoming a meal, or a bed, a new trail, or a cleaner beach. We are fortunate to be of service to our community during this time of need, but we wouldn’t be here without each of you who carry us through with your trust and partnership... Join us today, on #GivingTuesday, to make a difference for Mendocino County through generosity and support for our local community. #GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. Just as our donors have transformed Mendocino County for decades, we are inspired to work with you to keep our communities thriving. People are coming together today in a variety of ways to show unity. T...he last Giving Tuesday, December 3, 2019, generated $2 billion in giving, just in the United States, and inspired millions of people worldwide to volunteer, perform countless acts of kindness, and donate their voices, time, money, and goods. Are you ready to unleash your generosity? It is a great day to connect with what inspires you, and focus your philanthropic energy there. Here are a few ways to make a difference now: * Give directly to local non-profit organizations that you believe in. * Volunteer for a local non-profit in need of help. * Make a donation to a Community Foundation fund to support Mendocino County: * COVID-19 Relief Fund to assist individuals and non-profits impacted by the pandemic. (http://ow.ly/TRD550CyNCO) * Disaster Fund to assist those impacted by wildfire and other natural disasters. (http://ow.ly/wZEP50CyNCC) * General Support Fund to cover operational costs. We at the Community Foundation of Mendocino County are excited to share our newest Annual Report with you. Fiscal year 2019-2020 has been a busy year and we are taking the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the many partnerships that make our work possible; our donors who believe in our ability to help Mendocino County thrive, our non-profit partners who are busy at work, and our community leadership partners who work side-by-side with us to help strengthen our communit...ies. We tip our hat to each of you in gratitude for trusting in us and working with us to make Mendocino County a wonderful place to live. When 2020 began, we could not have foreseen the year to come. Highlights of our year include: * COVID-19 Relief Program on page 3; * Keffeler Family Scholarship on page 5; * Fund for the Visual and Performing Arts on page 9; * Our Leadership Projects on page 13; * Our Partners in Philanthropy on page 15. Our donors enabled us to make an incredible impact over the past 8 months, including granting out more than $1M countywide to-date to support individuals, small businesses, and non-profit organizations. Our standard fee does not cover all the operating costs associated with this multi-pronged relief program, which is why any support to the Foundation's General Fund will enable us to continue our response efforts and position us to respond to other disasters as they present themselves. www.communityfound.org UNDERWRITING PROVIDED BY: Adventist Health; Anderson Valley Brewing Co.; Bailey’s; Café Beaujolais; Community First Credit Union; ComputAccount; Crane of Ukiah; Fund Evaluation Group (FEG); Scott R. Remembering Nash Two days before Nash Bartolomie passed away, he called John Lazaro to let him know he had finished work on a custom table the Lazaro’s had commissioned. Nash had taken the wooden ski-deck of a wrecked speed boat and using stainless steel, turned it into an elegant bar, demonstrating his incredible talent with metal and wood. Heart-broken at hearing of Nash’s death, Marcia and John Lazaro ultimately felt that since they wouldn’t be able to pay Nash for his beautiful craftsmanship that they should find a way to put that money to work to keep Nash’s memory alive and help other kids like Nash, find their way, which is how the Nash Bartolomie Industrial Arts Scholarship Fund was formed. Small Business Innovation Grants Now in our eighth month of sheltering-in-place small businesses in our community continue to need support to see them through these historic times. When we established the Business Innovation and Resiliency Fund to support small businesses struggling due to the pandemic in May, many people answered the call to help us match an initial anonymous gift of $100,000. The $220,000 we eventually raised was awarded to West Business Development Center ...(West) to re-grant to local micro-businesses. By leveraging available funding, we are thrilled to announce that a third round of grants will be made available to micro-businesses in December. West has recently received an additional $150,000 from the County of Mendocino CARES Act funding, leveraging the impact of our philanthropic giving into a total of $370,000 to support struggling Mendocino County businesses... There was a shift in our community three years ago. That moment when the blaze rolled into our neighborhoods and destroyed the homes and livelihoods of so many altered us. The Redwood Complex Fire left a wake of destruction, and was the impetus for the creation of Mendocino-ROC, the long-term fire recovery team, chaired by the Community Foundation. The role our many, many donors played in building up the Disaster Fund in the days and weeks and months that followed the fire led to one of our community’s most in-depth recovery efforts in recent history. It also set the Foundation on a path of ongoing community leadership.
