Tonight I attended the Fresno City Council meeting in DT Fresno. At stake was a vote on the Rental Housing Improvement Act Regulations. They are rather complicated, and add another layer of inspections to prevent slumlords who abuse their tenants by not making needed repairs and allow them to live in squalid conditions. I spoke out in opposition asking for a delay to allow more financial studies on the impact these will have on Landlords, especially those who are already doing the right thing. Punishing ALL Landlords for a small minority of slumlords is neither fair nor equitable to all. After much debate and a vocal atmosphere, the measure passed by a slim majority, 4-3.
