Personally, Christmas and New Year’s Eve have been my favorite holidays for as long as I can remember! The holiday season is often associated with love, family, and friendship. ... However, the holidays can also bring their own challenges and turn into an incredibly stressful time of year. This post names a a handful of challenges that folks may face with their mental and physical health during the holidays. 2020 has challenged us in so many ways and has left many of us feeling exhausted. As you navigate this holiday season, which will probably look different than what you’re used to, remember to care for yourself through the process. P.S. I selected a variety of images for this post to represent some of the holidays that occur during November and December (i.e., Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Diwali, and Christmas). Trying to reduce sugar during the holidays but still have a treat? Try some modifications to make a cozy cup of hot chocolate! . Posted @withregram @mamaknows_nutrition ... Since holiday treats are plentiful right now, I love to find ways to reduce the sugar a little bit, or add some extra nutrition, to help balance things out. Tip #1- if using a hot chocolate mix, I prefer mixing with milk than water. That way you’re adding some protein and fat that will help keep them full AND be more satisfying to drink. Tip #2- chocolate milk becomes hot chocolate with a quick heating on the stovetop! (Or microwave, but be careful because it can get hot spots and you don’t want them to burn their mouth.) My favorite is fairlife because it has less added sugar. Usually, I mix it with some plain milk to reduce the added sugar further. Tip #3- control what’s in it by making your own! Especially if you need to do dairy free. This recipe is adapted from @detoxinista Easy dairy-free hot chocolate Serves 2 kids - 1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk - 1 tbsp cocoa powder - 2 to 3 tsp maple syrup - 1/4 tsp vanilla extract Whisk all together in a saucepan over medium-high heat until smooth and hot. Let cool slightly or add ice cubes so it’s a safe temperature for your little one! - Questions on cocoa powder and caffeine?? One serving of this recipe has about 6mg of caffeine, compared to about 100mg in a cup of coffee. It’s such a small amount that I don’t worry about it for them at all! What age is hot chocolate okay for?
